I'm in the process of applying for a job (a job posted in the careers section of the corporate website). If I don't receive a response (in about a week or so), should I call the company and try to follow up or assume that the company isn't interested in interviewing me?

don't put all your eggs in one basket. Move on to other prospects. If you get a reply then deal with it. Don't wait for singular response from a singular application.

Definitely apply for as many positions as you can, in the best case you can choose amongst them. Corporations are in another time zone and a week is extremely short unless something is quite critical to them. I wouldn't be surprised if they took a month to reply.

Each requisition can get several hundred responses. Recruiters usually do a quick scan of incoming resumes and either disqualify them or put them in a holding pattern. Once they have enough prescreened resumes (which can take a few weeks in an urgent situation, longer for non-urgent) they'll usually phone screen or pass to the hiring manager to review.

Phone call follow ups, unless you were referred in and given a specific contact, is more likely to make you look like you don't understand corporate well. If they are ready to talk to you, they'll call. If you call, they'll just say they're reviewing resumes and will call you if you're a fit. You're taking up their time and if you do that more than once or twice they'll remember you... as being kind of a pest.

Apply for whatever interests you and you're qualified for, but don't spam the application process. Every recruiting system out there allows the recruiter to view your profile along with a list of what you've applied to, and applying to 200 jobs makes you look desperate and non-discriminating.

A week is really short, and follow up doesn't really help much in a large corporate environment, though it can be worthwhile in a smaller company.

I'm a recent graduate, so I don't have as much experience as others who are applying. The reason why I want to follow up is because my resume doesn't give a comprehensive picture of who I am. I'm worried that recruiters will simply set aside my application because of my lack of experience.

See, the issue with these questions are that every place is different.

Some places would frown upon following up, some places would prize it, and some would be indifferent. To further complicate it, some places are so red taped that even trying to find the right person to contact would be painful. Then it also depends on the person looking through the resumes. In some organizations, the recruiter or HR person is the gatekeeper to the hiring manager while in other places, the HR person's job is to simply make sure the minimum requirements (such as years experience) are met while they hand over the 100 filtered resumes to the manager.

This is why networking is the way to go. They may not be able to hand your resume to the hiring manager, but they would give you enough info as to how the organization is structured.

The best thing for a new grad is to simply put yourself out there. Go to meetings within your industry, meet people, go to informational interviews and let them know who you are and what you want to do. Always respect the organizations process on hiring.
