Quick Question

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I would like to ask a quick question. This maybe the most ridiculous question ever posted on this board, but I really need an answer. Is it possible to upgrade the motherboard for a cpu after it has been used? (My friend who knows more on the subject told me that it is possible, but really hard and can do some damage to the cpu)

Also how hard is it to replace a heatsink/fan and does it damage the cpu? Thanks in advance.

You're sentence structure is confusing. Does "it" refer to the motherboard or the CPU?

And I have no idea what "upgrade the motherboard for a cpu" means. Does your question refer to upgrading the motherboard or to upgrading the CPU?

Oh I mean upgrading the motherboard, while using the same cpu.

if the socket of the new motherboard is the fitting for your old cpu, then yes, it is possible, with a little knowledge, everybody could replace a motherboard and put the cpu out of the old mb to a new mb

all you need is a screwdriver, some thermal grease and patience (and of course, new windows installation)

If the new motherboard can support the CPU (and any other components in the PC, ie RAM, PCIe video cards), then you can upgrade the motherboard. You'll need to make sure it's the right CPU socket, has a compatible chipset, uses the correct RAM (184-pin DDR or 240-pin DDR2?), and has the right video card slot (AGP, PCIe), if applicable.

As for the heatsink/fan, it depends on the heatsink used, really, some are easier than others to install. In general, it's relatively easy, assuming you know what you're doing (ie. read the manual), and unless you happen to be using power tools, i doubt you'll damage the CPU. I'd recommend looking for heatsink installation tutorials, many sites publish them, and they'll give you a good idea of how easy/hard it is to do.
