quick: Which CPU is better for games? K62/550 or K63/400?

Neither?

In all seriousness, I'd say the 550. The K6-3 only has extra cache, which doesn't help all that much in games. Well, not more than clock speed.

thanks. that is what I thought. Are the FPU units the same on the two chips?

I am willing to bet they will perform about the same. Although a 450 Mhz k6-3 will trounce a k6-2 550.

FYI, this machine currently has a P200 mmx in it. can support K63/450 or k62/550 max (ASUS P5AB)

the k63/450 is 50 bucks more than the k62/550 at around $133 bucks...

hmmmm decision, decisions....

I've had both types of cpu's (K6-2 and K6-3). While the added cache on the K6-3 helped in most integer based apps, it didn't add any performance to gaming.

I'd say get the 550mhz.

Just search through anand's archives... the K6-2 is about equal to the K6-III in gaming performance MHZ/MHZ. The K6-III however kills the K6-2 in business MHZ/MHZ.

Get the faster one in MHZ for games...

I dont think the extra $50 is worth the minimal performace gaing you will achieve going with the K6-3.

You will see no performance gain in gaming on the K6-3 but you will see a nice performance increaase in bussiness apps and photo and video editing with the L3 cache enabled on the K6-3.

The K6-3 is just a K6-2 with 256kB full speed L2 cache.

From what I've seen that gives the K6-3 about a 100Mhz speed edge
(meaning that a K6-3 400 would be about even with a K6-2 500)

Depends what you want it for....for most people the 64K L1 cache of the K6-2 is enough for the 150Mhz speed boost to give it an edge.

I'd say the K6-2 550, good luck.

Kitros: The Asus P5A are socket7 boards. Seen a Socket7 celeron lately?

Thanks for all your input guys...

this is just my backup system for buddies coming over to play a little counter-strike

my main machine is the now antiquated BP6 with dual Cellie 400s (clocked to 550)

oh BTW, probably be going with the K62/550 'cause of the higher attainable clockspeed and better price.

L3 cache would be nice for all around use,
but not "50 bucks more" nice..

It never ceases to amaze me the 'opinions' that some people have regarding systems. (see above). Anyway, faced w/ your situation, I would definitely go w/ the k6-2 550, using good paste, good hs/fan and a little luck, you might get 600 outta it (using the 2x to remap to 6x). I'm hoping to get a little more use outta my ss7 boards, looking to see if any of the k6-2+ chips leak onto the market like I hope. Running one of those at 600 looks to be very equitable for a 'dead' architecture, and allow me to save up for a high end T-bird setup later on.

I'd grab the K6-2 550.

I had one slapped w/a V3 2K oc'ed to 183 and it was playable w/ all the recent games.

Get a decent HS/fan combo. My chip ran kinda hot even w/a Global Win FEP-32.
