How fast? If you're thinking 2 weeks, forget it. If you're thinking more along the lines of 8-12 weeks, then it's possible.

I always hear ppl talk about low weight, high reps. But that didnt work for me. What did work for me was HIGH weight, LOW reps. Somewhere in the range of 6 reps, with a weight that doesnt allow me to do more than 6 reps even if my life depended on it. (btw, get a spotter!) If I did more than 6 reps, then I knew it was time to move up in weight.

Also, I ate a lot during this period. About every 3-4 hour was meal time. Nothing big and no junk food, just some protein and carbs in each meal. First thing in the morning, I'd eat. First thing after a workout, I'd eat. I was eating about 160-200 grams of protein per day. (I weighed ~155 at the time.) After about 6 weeks of this, I had gained about 10 pounds, and noticed a lot more muscle definition. All my muscles were stronger, and I had increased my bench by about 30 pounds, so most of that 10 pounds was muscle. I had gained a bit of fat too, but I was already pretty lean to begin with. I probably should've done some cardio, but I could never get myself to do it.

I suppose you could go a completely different route: do all cardio. That will probably make you look more cut (depending on how much muscle you already have), but you'll look skinny too.

While high reps didnt work for me, some ppl swear by it. So, who knows. Oh, and no matter how you decide to split up your workout days, remember to mix up the exercises. Sometimes I'll notice that an exercise will become my favorite (cuz it becomes easy), and realize that I have to change my routine.

edit: almost forgot. I was also trying to keep my fat intake to about 35~45 grams a day. A small can of tuna has 32 grams of protein, and only 1.5 grams of fat. I was eating 2-3 cans a day. Open a can and eat it w/ bread. Gets boring after a while, but hey, I cant cook! Also, you might want to be careful, since some fish have a high mercury content (due to the polluted water they swim in), so you might want to look that up before going on a heavy fish diet.

The water I am in is in the upper 40's to lower 50's. I have always said that swimming is an excellent fitness exercise, but things like jogging are quicker. There have also been studies that have shown that swimmers are more phyiscally fit than joggers, which I also believe. I am a faithful believer that swimming and water fitness is the best way to go.

I got into great, no GREAT shape, swimming, but not incredible definition.

All the studies say the same thing, check them out. I am, and always will be, a swimmer.

If you can come up with something different about "DEFINITION" let me know.

<< Oh and Flat, I've been swimming for about 10 years now so it's not like I've done this overnight and it could have been fixed years ago. However, part of the problem is I've streached the the tendons and that gives me less control of my stroke so the problem snowballs. The flaw in my stroke is reaching to much with my left arm and over the years the tendons streached enough that my shoulder doesn't sit in the socket like it should and it looks like I've torn some cartlidge. My doctor gave me the ok to keep on swimming until championships so I'm just popping pills to keep the inflammation in my rotator cuff down for the next month until feb 19th when I get chopped. >>

I have had 5 shoulder operations.

If you have 3% body fat, then you are among, hmmm, the 0.1 percentile or so. Olympic althletets have about 5-6% bodyfat, you must be exceptional.

My point, and don't get lost here, is that you can lose a great deal of weight swimming.

You will lose more it higher cardiovascular exercises, such as jogging (ow my legs).

You will get in better shape over the same period of time if you were in the swimming program.

You will lose more bodyfat if you are in the jogging program.

If there is any other information that contradicts me, please post a link and I will respond.

I stand by my knowledge...

running at a sustainable pace will burn about 500 calories an hour, swimming will burn upwards of 660. Why? because you can use your whole body rather then just your lower body. And if he wants pecs and arms running won't do to much.

Oh, Flat, I'm just your normal highschool varsity swimmer, nothing special. I could pull 5:27 in the 500 and 55's in the 100 before my shoulder injury. Now I have to swim 100's and 50's because my shoulder is on fire after a 200. A distance swimmer with a messed up shoulder is a sad sight indeed.

Make sure you get PLENTY of water and PLENTY of sleep also! 8-10 hrs... Your muscles need this to repair themselves and grow. So get off ATOT and get to bed!

ps. You may wanna get on some creatine also...

Ya, a lot of ppl use creatine and it seems to work. A lot of ppl are worried about creatine's potential side-effect (if any), so these ppl dont use it. Personal choice, I think.

I didnt use creatine. Just workout HARD, eat TONS, and sleep well. Just doing this, I started to see stretch marks showing up (where my shoulder joins my biceps). Stretch marks come from growing too fast. At that point I decided to cut back a bit.

You dont swim in water that is in the upper 40s to lower 50s. You said in a previous post 80F. Additionally without some serious protection you would become hypothemic very quickly in ~50 degree water. What studies? You are just plain dumb dude.

Olympians have 5-6% eh? Good to know. I didnt know they measured these things and put out a statistic like that. Thats some skinny women! :frown:

Here is a set I do often, 3x10 minutes of vertical breastroke kick, with a 25-50lbs weight on your back. arms crossed behind the back. deadly[/i] >>

OUCH!
i swim breaststroke too, but i dont do anything close to that. you must be a beast (or sloudnov )

and im with Flat on this one, swimming helps give definition, and general fitness. i know that over 13 years i havent worked out in the weight room often, and yet im pretty well defined. but i dont think you want to wait 13 year

Half an inch of fat anywhere on your body can hide all the muscle in the world. Remeber this and you will be well on your way to getting definition.

You have to reduce calorie intake. Eat less BUT DO NOT STARVE yourself though. Thats not good or healthy at all.

Drink water instead of any drink I do that now, nothing but water I drink all day, even when I'm out. MAN its tempting at times to resist a cold coke when your really thirsty!

Do 15 reps x 3 sets at about 50% max strength. It seems like its not working much but TRUST me if you do that you WILL FEEL YOUR MUSCLES burn. You get tired, again you won't get fast results quick. IT all takes time.

Biggest thing cut all non essential foods. Don't snack on chocolate, cakes, biscuits. Eat fruit instead.

AS mentioned by someone earlier you can have all the muscles but if its covered with half an inch of fat its not going to show......

You're running pretty slow then.

I just went over to a calorie expendature calculator and punched in my numbers: 153 lbs. and 60 minutes and this is what I got:

Running: 7.5 mph (8 min/mile) 918 <-this is NOT the most vigorous run they had
Swimming: butterfly 808 <-That was the most vigorous swim they had

Check for yourself: linky dinky

Just my 2 cents.

edited to add this for you television slackers out there:
Watching TV 55 <-that's per hour people!

Swimming is really great excercise for muscle definition. It's low stress but really helps to shape and give you better tone.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like he wants to get bigger, not leaner.

For getting bigger, I would recommend eating MORE. A lot more.

Also, I remember that when I first started working out, I could work chest everyday and still make awesome progress. After a while, you have to start pacing yourself or else you get worn out and overtraining causes you to stop growing.

Personally...I think its disgusting to see ripped skinny people. If you're gonna get ripped...get some mass! Lift very heavy for low reps (6-8 reps x 3 sets) to add mass quick...then when you have the mass just lift medium weight for alot of reps and do alot of cardio....but watch it...dont overtrain.
