Quickly transferring files from PC to Laptop with USB 3.0?

Every evening I end up with around 100gb of files that need to be transferred from PC to my laptop. One has Windows 8.1 64-bit, the other, Windows 7 64-bit. I've looked up USB bridges, and mostly found only USB 2.0. What I've found under USB 3.0 is male-to-male connections, but from what I've also read - this may result in a short circuit.

Connecting the laptop wirelessly or via ethernet cable to the network is not fast enough within the time frame that I have. I'd like to avoid needing to purchase an external hard drive if possible. Can anyone help me out on what exactly I need to buy to transfer files from my PC to my laptop?

Thanks!

I picked up a couple 32Gb USB sticks (3.0) from NewEgg for $10 ea. so I can be mobile with a bunch of data in my pocket.
I have not regretted it

That introduces a middle man though, meaning I have to transfer 100gb twice. I'd like to simply plug my laptop into the towers front USB 3.0 port and let it roll.

Go ahead and buy a Toshiba CanVio. It is USB 3, fast, and will provide you with a backup of your data. Sometimes a middleman is valuable.

If you want to maximize transfer rates, an SSD in both ends is required. HDDs are actually a bigger bottleneck then USB if you're transferring large number of smaller files...

Ethernet's not fast enough? Even Gigabit Ethernet via USB 3.0? (Get 2 and a crossover cable.) That should take less than 20 minutes to transfer.

Edit: This assumes you don't have gigabit Ethernet on your laptop and don't have a free gigabit Ethernet port on your desktop. If I'm wrong about these assumptions, get fewer devices.

Still not fast enough? Get two pairs, hook up any other connections, and use a BitTorrent server/client to do the transfer over all links at once!

Still not fast enough? Could you remove the hard drive from the laptop and connect it to a USB 3.0 dock?

You may need a USB 3.0 transfer cable that has a compact circuitry segment in the middle of it, such as:

Note: there may be less expensive versions available on eBay or Newegg, that ship direct from China.

This one has no middle circuitry:

As far as "short circuit": maybe using USB 3.0 ports on both devices + a USB 3.0 transfer cable avoids that problem?

Gigabit ethernet, you don't even need a crossover cable because auto crossover is part of the spec. Should take under 20min to transfer unless it's a ton of 4k files...

Yeah regular Male to Male USB will probably fry one or two Mobos.

Getting the 1TB HD as mentioned by corkyg is the least intrusive way and provides a lot of flexibility for other use as well (Like keeping backup images of OS HDs).

In any case I do not recommend it, but the following is the USB solution.

have you thought about BitTorrent Sync? depending on the nature of the data and how its created this could be a handy and wireless way to do this.
