i'm much in need to keep my case super silent so i'm wanting to replace my 120mm fans with quiet fans.

i have a hard time choosing yate loon and panaflo.

which pill would you take?

There is already a thread going on nearly the same topic - why not join that instead of starting a new thread? Totally unnecessary...

You can only get Panaflo in 38mm (1.5 inches) thickness in the 120mm fans - the YL is 25mm (1 inch) thickness only. That may cut it down right there. Then panaflo will cost at least twice as much. Then again, the YL can only do 47CFM - if you may need more on occasion, then they are out of the picture. Check into the new Scythe 120mm fans with the Sony-developed bearings. High-priced (in Pana territory), quiet, plenty of air and works well with fan controllers.

I just picked up a couple of yate loons, and they move a lot of air and are pretty quiet. My northbridge fan now sounds much louder... Oh, they are 12cm or 120mm fans btw, 120cm would be a ceiling fan!

Whatever you get, make sure you also get a fan controller. Very few fans are "quiet" at 12v, but just going straight for the really slow 800 -1000rpm fans might not help if you have a hot machine. Get something 1500rpm or less and then hook it up to a fan controller for the best cooling when you need it and quiet when you want it.

If it's for a case Yate Loon hands down. A 120mm Yate Loon @ 12v runs quieter then a 120mm Panaflo L1A @ 5v.

If it's for your CPU the Panaflo would be my choice due to it's higher reliability (hydrowave bearing).

sorry i didn't clarify my thread enough. i'm actually looking for two 120mm fans for my case.

so YL's are your best bet?

I always prefer to purchase Low Speed 38mm Delta's and have a fan controller (or Speedfan in a CPU cooler's case) control the speed. That way its ultra quiet when at idle, and moves plenty of air when things get hot.

bump.

i need some serious solutions without a fan controller. why do i need a fan controller. i heard YL's got some fans with RPM sensor so it'd monitor the fan speed?

I have 3 YL in my comp running at full speed with no fan controller, and it seem quiet by me. Perhaps those clubbing days has affected my hearing.

I have 3 Cooler Masters at full speed and no fan controller. Still able to sleep beside this thing.

I think almost everyone would be happy a 120mm Yate Loon at 12v.

As far as fan controllers; I don't use them. I use SpeedFan to control both the CPU and exhaust fans. This will depend on your motherboard of course, but almost all can control at least the CPU fan. Intake fans I run at a fixed 5v but you should be ok with the Yate Loon's at 12.

Ok, so most people will tell you Pana or YL or sometimes people insert some random brand that's quiet and stuff....

Here's the problem. Manufacturers make fans that are slow, medium and fast usually. Fast fans are loud as fvck like an engine. Mediums are tolerable, running 30 - 35dB. Slows are usually under 30, or even under 25dB.

Here's my recommendation: Get a fan that can qualify as a MEDIUM fan.

I have a Medium Panaflo (120x38mm) and 2 x Yate Loon mediums (120 x 25mm).... CFMs are comparable if you check stats (roughly 80 CFM), but you can easily tell that Yate Loons are softer than Panaflos.

Panaflos once were king, but if you go check out SilentPCReview, Yate Loons are teh new king.

I HIGHLY recommend a fan controller because there's no point in getting a slow@$$ fan that you can't crank up. I can go on low speed when I sleep, but if I game or it gets hot, just crank up the fans. I'm not going to be annoyed when I'm blasting my music or blasting my CS:S game.

YL is the way to go, not Panaflo. Pana's aren't bad, but they aren't the best anymore.

looks like i'll go with YL's medium fans but which fan controller do you recommend? my case is black so the panel obviously has to be black too.

edit: like this, vantec fan controller?

scythe s-flex "f" offer 80cfm and 25dba, or something like that. It's probably the best balance out there. The s-flex "d" is like 10dba but only 30cfm.

This is a pretty good review of a 17 quietish 120mm fans comparing noise and cooling ability at a number of different voltages:
http://www.madshrimps.be/gotoartik.php?articID=421

From that test for the best cooling/dba the following stand out:
Scythe S-FLEX SFF21F (1600 rpm)
GlobalWin 1202512L (1200 rpm)
Nexus D12SL-12 (900 rpm)

Have you looked at SpeedFan at all?

I've built four or five near dead silent systems now all of them have their fans regulated via SpeedFan, no fan controllers needed.

As far as the Yate Loons go; I've never seen a medium speed, just the low speed variant. Not that I would ever both looking since the low speed Yate Loon is more then enough for case cooling.

medium might be 1350rpm.

I think that is the low speed. Medium is 1650 according to SPCR forums.

Yeah, kind of a bogus review/line-up if they don't include YL or Panaflo in the group...

Although the Nexus fans are built by YL (I think), basically they only change is the coloring and badging.

It's 1650 RPM and that's what I'm currently using (3 of them) in my case as we speak for 1 and a half years straight 24/7 at full speed and 3 feet from me when I sleep. These YL come with blue LED that I had to cut since I've out grown sleeping with my nightlight on.
