Are these maxtor's any good "MAXTOR Quiet Drive 80GB 7200RPM Model # 6L080L4 -D740X"? my friend says they are 27 dba at the loudest. From what i've read most other drives are well into the 40's. These run for $112 on newegg. Is there a better quiet drive?

Seagate Barracuda IV drives are much quieter than the Maxtors, and just about as fast (from storagereview). The 40 gig one is at 20dBa on idle (or some number around 20).

I can vouch for the Seagtate drives, extremely reliable and the quietest drives I have used to date. They are quieter than the Maxtors IMHO.

Seagate Barracuda IV's are great drives. But you just cant RAID them so be aware of that.

ive read that ide raid just isn't worth it.
i think ill get like a 7200 rpm for windows and apps, and a 5400 of some sort for storage. 5400's should be pretty quiet right?

I believe it all depends on what you're using your PC for. Many people absolutely LOVE RAID.. some are skeptical....

I saw if you're using your hard drive for alot of intensive video editting, music editting, etc, "try" the RAID and see how you like it.

These drives are supposed to be as quiet as 5400rpm drives, so unless 5400 drives are a lot cheaper, just buy enough of these for your comp. If you want to raid them, I think Seagate sells special cuda IVs capable of being raided.

FWIW I've installed four Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB drives in the past couple months and every drive was literally silent. A couple of them have been in service long enough to feel confident they aren't going to develop the squeal that's all too common to the Maxtor L drives.

I would recommend the Seagate Baracuda IV as well for quiet drives. I wouldn't go with a 5400rpm drive unless it's just going to be used for archiving, but the cuda is a good fairly fast 7200rpm drive that has good reliability. I wouldn't recommend raiding the cuda but if there is one that can be raided then you might consider that. The Maxtor is a good fast drive, but I wouldn't consider it to be as quiet as the cuda although it can be raided much easier.
