I got a tbird 900 a while ago and a chrome orb for it. It seems like everywhere on the internet people praise this thing as really quiet, but it isn't! The fan, when removed from the sink hardly denerates any noise, yes, but when in the heatsink it's quite noisy because of the airflow. I even have tried covering the entire heatsink with a thick layer of masking tape to prevent airflow through all those fins, but that actually made the noise worse. Apparently the airflow noise is being caused by the air being sucked around in the orb's "hole", since the heatsink actually goes up around the fan. I want a sink that will hardly be noticeable above a PS and a 7200RPM IBM HD. Does anybody know of an HSF like this?

THANKS.

Get the Taisol cooler. Its really quiet, and the cooling performance is much better than the Chrome orb.

Look into the Alpha PAL6035 with the Sanyo fan. It is actually quieter and more effective then the Orb.

PAL6035

At Plycon you have the choice between 3 different fans. Their prices are reasonable to.

Or maybe the quietPC SocketA cooler.
Not a great cooler, but if you want SILENT, it's your only choice without modding an alpha/whatever

I have a Coolermaster dp5-6h51 and it keeps my tbird 850 (not overclocked)at 41C under great load. Not the coolest but a very good performance. Cheap, easily available and very very QUIET. Good luck.

Thanks for all the replies, everyone, but do you know if these HSFs are actually much quieter than the chrome orb in real life? I want to make sure I'm going to be satisfied before I go and buy another cooler, and I'm kind of cautious of what I hear about various HSFs because almost all the sources say that the chrome orb is really quiet, and it sure isn't.

go Taisol if you want quiet and good cooling.

why not buy a 60 to 80 mm adapter and a nice heatsink, then you can get great cfms and great dba's

Hi, this is actually painKiller.

I did a messy bad bios flash on my normal computer, I'm still pursuing that. I'm using another comp now and I had to sign up again because I didn't write down my password, I just have a cookie on my other comp that auto logs in.
Anyway...

From what everybody has been saying and some other research I did, I'm debating between the Alpha PAL6035, PEP66 and the Taisol CGK742092. Now who can honestly tell me which of these can be made the quietest (I mean which one considering all fan options and setups is quietest) while cooling a t-bird 900 oc'd 1GHz down to about 50C or so under load.

Thanks everybody!

I just made a 60 to 92 (44 CFM) adapter for my FOP 32 and it was not any quiter or cooler...

Definetely the pep66 or the new Globalwin.
Get a very quiet fan and you should be set.
The pep66 really is a monster heatsink in and of itself, therefore it should be able to expel the most heat.

If you can find an Arcticooler, they are very quiet, plus, they are very effective as well, probably the best cooling/noise ratio there is.

Oh, yeah, and am I right that the pep66 won't be able to fit on my k7t pro2? Would I have to get a modded one?

I've got to agree with rondeemc on this one.. that SanyoDenki is whisper quiet. I'm so jealous of my friend.. I'll have to get one later maybe.. they sell these preassembled at PCHertz.com.. anyways I'm telling you this thing is so quiet that your case fans will be the noise problem.. in my friends computer it was easy to hear it because he had some 60mm and 80mm generic fans that came with his case and they were noticably louder than the SanyoDenki..

So, do you think a pal6035 with the sanyo denki fan would be quieter than pep66 with the delta 10mm?

Definatly the pal with a quiet sanyo denki fan is gonna be quieter then a PEP with the thin 10mm fan. The side by side pal and pep with the same fan, the pep will create less noise due to its heatsink structure of being being a straight path of airflow through the sink. On reason i don't care for the pal is it has to suck air from its side under the skirt and through its pins, creates some air turbulance noise, and the fan works less efficently cause it doesn't have much air space to suck from like the pep. Another bad thing about the pal is the center pins don't get nearly as much airflow as the pins on the edge, whats nice about the pep is the base pins right by the core get the full pull of the fan.

Hey,
I DO have the Adda 16.1 dBA Fan, and man, first I thought that it wasn't even working it was so quiet. That's one of the best buys I made in the last months. From the Ergonomic point of view.

Well, I finally got a bios replacement chip for my mobo, so I'm back on my normal comp as painKiller.

Also, the pep66 with 10mm fan came.

THERE MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG. IF NOT, I'M GOING TO BE VERY MAD AT THE PEOPLE WHO RECOMMENDED IT.

The pep66 is slightly louder than my old chrome orb and only makes my chip 2deg cooler.(35C instead of 37C idle in BIOS.

Why?!??!?!??!???

I had a wicked idea of trying the sink without a fan, but it got to 45C in about 7 mins, at which point I turned the comp off!

Don't blame me I said Alpha PAL6035.. with at least the SanyoDenki.. that would have had nearly the same performance without all the loudness of the 10mm that comes with the PEP.. however since you already bought the PEP consider an 80mm fan adapter.. that'll make it way quiter and it'll have even better cfm tho it all depends on the brand name of the 80mm fan you buy for it.. good luck

I have a Chrome Orb and like it a lot. For the price it's an excellent cooler, I don't see why it gets such a bad rap. It fairly quiet and cools very well. Sure, others can cool a few degrees cooler and are quieter but sheesh... the Chrome Orb sells for 7 bucks.

That's not being 'suckered' into buying one. That's a great deal!
