QUIET XP fans...are there any?

I'm currently running a volcano 7 on my AMD XP 1800+. It's not overclocked, so I'm wondering if I need the volcano. The darn thing is so loud it almost keeps me up at night. Is there an AMD certified fan that's quieter than the volcano 7?

If you wanted something quieter while giving you sufficient cooling, you would probably have to get a better heat sink that would support a lower rpm 80mm fan. The GC69 is an excellent entry-level heat sink that can be had for ~$10 at SVC. I think they sell it w/out a fan and you can pick a nice quiet one like a Vantec Stealth or a Panaflo L1A. Your temps will be borderline high, but thats about as quiet you will get, and should be ok as long as you don't OC and the room your PC is in doesn't get too hot (especially in the summertime). Also for a low-noise system, you need to make sure you have adequate airflow in your case (other quiet fans for intake and outtake).

The solution of using a low rpm 80mm fan works great. I'm using the volcano 7 with a low rpm fan and don't have any problem running it. It's also very quiet (19dB).

Go for it, but be warned! You can't stand any noisy fans after installing one of these quiet ones.!!

Good luck

Don't let me be the voice of reason here, but why not run Burncpu or some other stressor, and then just use the in-line potentiometer included with the volcano 7. After the cpu reaches maximum temperature, you can slow the fan in small increments till you reach the maximum load temperature you're comfortable with.

You can buy a potentiometer at radio hack for all of $3.

Actually, the stock fan that comes with the GC-69 is pretty quiet. I'm using one now and it's definately quieter than my old Volcano.

If nothing else, remove the steel Tt emblazoned grill form the fan, that will noticeably lower noise. Possibly then add grommets or o-rings between the fan and HS shroud.
I've done this on my V9 and it's like a different fan

What I currently have is an arctic super silent pro. Temps are about 10C higher than a volcano 7+
However, it makes very little noise.

I'm running an Athlon XP 1700+ with a Cooler Master DP5-7JD1B-0L that runs pretty quiet. But I cant tell which one I am hearing, the CPU fan or the fan from my "Smart & Silent" Enermax EG365P-VE FM power supply, but I think its the power supply.

But since you already have a Heatsink then I would just get a nice quiet 80mm fan to put on that Valcano 7 or do something with that sensor so it doesn't think the case is as warm as it is.

Vantec VA4-C7040 Aeroflow seems to have gotten some pretty good reviews. At 38db(A) it's not the most quiet fan on the market, but seems to be aimed more for the "I'd like a *reasonably* quiet fan that I can still use for overclocking" market.

Google search for "VA4-C7040 review" will get you a buncha sites.

I'm running an Alpha 8045 with a Panaflow L1A on it. XP 1800+ o/c to 2000+. I also dropped the voltage down to 1.575 volts. One panaflow L1A intake. The power supply fans make more noise than the Panaflows.

I love this budget heatsink and use them all the time!

I'm running a Volcano9 on a 1600+, and I've got the manual adjust thing all set up on the outside of my case. I can't hear it, but it could be my obscenely loud circle-k brand exhaust fan...

I've recently become aware of the iceberg liquid cooling system for cpu's. Anyone heard good things? bad things? Anyone have one that they love/hate? Are they really "silent"?

The way to go is the thermaltake 9 it has 3 modes: 1) Contorlable fan speed 2) Full speed which is LOUD 3) Temperature controlled. Which is the one you would want this is what I have running on my 1700+ BredA chip and it is quieter then my power supply. I just need to get an antec ps true and this baby will be extremely quiet, they are AMD recommend up to 2800+ and beyond. They have a copper core and the fan on top is a Thermaltake Smartfan2. I have this CPU fan and 3 of the Thermaltake Smartfan2's and I love these things I'm putting them in just about all the systems I make now. I have the thermal sensors one on the north bridge, another on the video card, and another on the memory. It keeps it running at 37 Degrees just browsing around and at 38 to 39 with a full load for hours while remaining quiet. OC'd it runs the same maybe a few RPMs higher which increases a few dB(A) whiel running at 1.7Ghz. They are nice for standard running but if you are OCing then from what I hear the SLK800 with a low rpm fan is the way to go. Hey anyone know how to make a case quieter I need to cut down some noise.

I like the Smart Fan 2's for cpu use given their adjustability yielding airflow unsurpassed by other marketed adjustable fans, and their quiet low rpm operation. An easy way to quiet a case with 4 of them, however, would be to either turn way down the 3 case fans or replace them with quieter fans- I don't really see a need for case fans moving that air volume.
Alternatively, as I've mentioned many times prior, in this and other threads, take the Tt logo'd steel grill off any of those fans-they are SO much quieter that way.

Hey I took off those grills I haven't listened to one without the grill since I got them cut my dB(A) down noticeably and you know what they say you can tell the difference with or 1 or 2 dB(A) but you can with 3 to 4 dB(A) I'm taking all of these grills off those grills make it look nice though you gotta admit if you got a big old antec case or something solid and sealed nicely you wouldn't have to worry about that kind of extra noise disturbance though well I like mine on full blast it gives me a headache in about 2 seconds

Sorry, kcbass, to stomp all over your thread....

Iovah:
Yeah, those grills look sweet, but definitely make the fans much louder.
Consider: Thermaltake has a new style grill for their Xaser series, they're spaced out from the fan, maybe quieter? Look around, I 'll bet you could pick one up somewhere and try it out.. lemme know if you find anything conclusive.

btw, try for some commas and periods.. makes it easier to read wtf you're saying

Chizow's recommendation of a gc69 is mine too. Relatively quiet, effective, inexpensive. One of the few good buys out there, along with the Evercool nd-18 from nexfan.

The larger 70-80mm fans make a less annoying kind of noise, too- lower pitched, less piercing...

I am running a vantex aeroflow and it is the quietest fan I have ever ran! Very happy with it and it does a great job on cooling also....not just quiet!

I am running a coolermaster HSC-V62. This is a very good and quiet heatsink. Barely any noise comes from it.

Hey guys I'm running a tbird 800 using the same volcano as mentioned above. Would it be alright to go with a panaflo + gc69 for it? I'm under the impression that tbirds run hotter than the newer processors. Also how big is this gc-69? Would it fit on a asus a7v mobo with all the ram slots filled? thanks.
