What's the quietest 60GB+ hard disk?

I would put it in an enclosure like the ones sold by quietpc.com, but I think any 60GB drive runs too hot (7W maximum) for their enclosures.

That said I need this SILENT. This will be in my bedroom, and it needs to be inaudiable less than 3m away, even in the dead of night.

Suggestions? Maybe I should get two cooler drives, and put them both in enclosures?

i'd recommend you to get a seagate barracuda IV
they're the quietest drives in the market right now

Really? A 7200 drive? I figured there'd be some 5400 thing that would be the quietest. That siad I guess there's no large 5400 drives.

The quetest drive is the Samsung spinpoint 5400RPM. It doesn't have much edge over the BaracudaIV in noise (1DB or less) and gets slaughtered on performance. So you're best bet is the Baracuda IV. Barley any idle noise (Easily drowned out by Intel stock P4 heatsink) and some of the quietest seeks i've heard.

Seek noise doesn't really bother me, I don't think.

I'll be running passive cooling on my CPU, and will be buying the quietest PSU I can source.

Will it be "silent" from <3m away, well I hope so.

I was wondering what CPU are you planning on passivly cooling and how you were going to do that.

Well the current CPU (this is a secondary PC for mp3 and other stuff) is a celeron 500.

That's running passively with a very cheap-looking heatsink. If I need something faster I expect you can run a P3 ~800 or so passively with a flower cooler or something.

Acording to the thread made by Eug the V is louder on seeks and much quieter than the IV on idle. But 21DB?! Even the sound of your breathing would drown that out!

If you don't mind louder seeks, then the V would probably do you well. But as it is the IV is inaudible with a 21DB single fan powersupply and no fans from 1M away. I doubt you'd get much difference from a V over an IV.

I'd go with the Seagate Barracude IV: 60G 7200rpm ATA100 2M ST360021A with Hydraulic Baring (Barracuda4 )
I've got one, and it's barely audible. Also, the price has dropped, at least up here in Canada, now only 129cad, which is about 70usd, I don't know if the prices are comparable in the U.S. or not.
Cheers,
Carl

Ive got two of em, an 80gb and 40gb variety, I cannot hear em (or could be my 40dba HSF making too much noise ).

The only time I can hear my Seagate 'cuda is when it's crunching away on a huge database. Even then it's pretty quiet.
