Most Def the BARRACUDA IV. Coming from a maxtor 7200rpm ATA66 drive the difference was unbelievable

Seagate Barracuda IV Performance is not as good as "louder" IDE drives though.

My Seagate Cheetah X15-36LP is one loud mofo compared to the IDE drives I've had in the past :Q

Silent!. Could goto that site for some nifty ideas on how to make your comp as silent as possible but you'll be sacrificing the ability to cool with many of the mods.

With all the reviews I've read on the IV, it's definiltey the quietest. I bought a IV 60gig from newegg a few days ago. Can't wait to (not) hear it.

Check out the samsung drivers, I've got one of their 720rpm 40Gb and can't hear it even when the red light is locked on

http://www.storagereview.com/ is a good site for hdd disc info, they often make note of the noise (or lack of) a hard disc makes. By the looks of things they are very impressed with the noise level of the Seagate Barracuda ATA IV.

What about those maxtor drives with the "dynamic fluid bearing" motors? I heard they were suppose to be quiet as well, but have transfer rates and seek times well above the seagate drives....

I heard the new maxtor's with the liquid bearings are mighty quiet... and fast too... I'm gonna pick two up as soon as I get paid...

Dont most modern HDs have a utility to change the "acoustic operating level" I know i can change my IBM, and I'm pretty sure that i can do the same with my Maxtor. I've tried the program with my IBM and it gets mighty quiet, but performace will drop a tad (the price you pay).

Doug117, AFAIK the utilities you mention lower the noise made when the drive seeks, but not the level of noise resulting from the spinning of the platters.
