I am two months and one week smoke-free after 16 years of the nasty things. I wasnt planning on quitting, one day at work i went out for one and had an epiphanny and decided that would be my last one. So far so good, trying to do it without any gum/inhalers/etc.

Big test will be in two weeks when Im in Vegas.

One day I'm going to have to try and Quit again. So I'm interested in how it turns out for you and what you did to succeed.

Good luck.

Well today was 3 weeks, 0 cigs smoked. I came close twice due to high stress events, first was a dog attack and the second was a 2 hour random drug test event but I made it through both without lighting up. Still missing smoking to be honest, just being stubborn is keeping me going at this point. Hopefully at 2 months in or so it should get easier..

For MOST people, after a week, you've broken any "physical addiction" to the nicotine...breaking the psychological addiction is the hard part.
For however long you smoked, you had a smoke after meals, after sex, with a beer, in times of stress, in happy times, out of boredom, when you first woke up, while on the shitter, and many, many other times where it was an unconcious thing...you just had a smoke while doing that activity.

I quit in 2004. Used the patches to help get through the first month or so, then, without the patches, I had minor withdrawals from the nicotine in the patches...but it was pretty minor. Stayed quit for almost 18 months...then, out of the blue, after a minor disagreement with my wife, I picked up a cigarette from somewhere...and I got so high, I almost fell down.
Pretty soon, I'd have a couple every week...then one or two every day...always chasing that buzz...and got it, although NOT nearly as good as that first one.
Now, I'm back to smoking 1/2 to 3/4 pack per day...and NEED to quit again, but my wife has threatened to leave for at least a month if I do.
For some unknown reason, she seems to think that I am difficult to get along with when I quit. I keep telling her that it's not ME who is difficult to get along with...it's HER!>

She doesn't buy it.

Congrats to those who are trying to quit. It's tough as hell...but it's worth it.

After a couple of months, I got my breath back, I stopped smelling like an ashtray, and I just felt better.

Yea, it's still strange to get in my car and NOT light up a cig. One of my quit attempts was similar as what happened to you, it wasn't stress-related, I was just bored. After 2 months without a smoke I figured I had smoking beat, under control so I bummed one off a co-worker and that was it, within 10 days I was back to pack/day. I now know that I cannot ever try that stunt again, If I do I'll just drive to the store and buy a pack cause it's over. As for the anger there is an interesting article on whyquit.com about it, seems smoking became an easier way to deal with things then actually working it out. Just go out an light up, and things seemed better but now that's not an option so I have to re-learn to deal with issues without a nicotine "boost". I am considering joing some sort of support group to help, not too much support at job as 60-70% of the people smoke!..

My girlfriend quit cold turkey back in January. She never relapsed, but there were times when we're hanging out and drinking with friends that she'd really get the urge to smoke. She doesn't get the urges anymore, and has actually come to really hate the smell of cigarettes.

 to your success though. I've never smoked, but I know quitting isn't an easy task.

Make sure you bump this thread next year when you're a year clean.

I quit two addictions cold turkey a few years ago. One was smoking, and had been smoking for a while. I started smoking during breaks at work every hour. The second was caffeine. I would probably drink over the suggested limit every day in caffeine and could not function if I did not have some every few hours. The 5 weeks of withdrawal and going cold turkey were hell, but I think you can do it. Don't give in, but it's always hard now in gas stations, convenience stores, or in stressful situations at work. I just want to buy a pack and smoke, but so far it's been over a year and I haven't given in, but the flash cravings are still there. I drink diet caffeine-free soda now and chew gum (just chewing gum).

GOOD LUCK.

I can't understand how people can afford to smoke these days. I quit in October '99 (almost 10 years, woohoo!!) and at the time in Connecticut I was paying about $12 for a carton of the biggest brands like Marlboro and Newport. Now it's close to $60 about half of which is taxes. In 10 years smokes have quintupled in price while gas has doubled.

Anyone here in NYC? What are cigarette prices in Manhattan now, close to $10 a pack?

It was getting out of hand the cost, first Obama puts a $.70 hike on to pay for some kid's insurance program then the state of FL added a $1.00/pack tax back in july. I was spending $275/month for 2 people to smoke, just f-ing ridiculous. Gotta love how the Government gets over on basically drug-addicted folks, nice!..

it's one of the few ways government can tax people without a huge uproar

raise taxes on gas? HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME THINK ABOUT DRIVING LESS! (or a more fuel efficient car)
raise taxes on high-income individuals ? HOW DARE YOU SOAK THE RICH WHO ALREADY PAY HIGH TAXES!

but taxes on tobacco? *yawn* I guess only smokers get excited ?

Good job, its the little stresses that make you reach for one without even thinking about it. I haven't stumbled yet, and I am really surprised it hasn't been any more difficult. I guess when you are really ready to quit, it is a lot easier.

When we moved to Kahleeforneeya in 87, a carton of Marlboros was around $10. (9.99 was common)

Nowadays, I think the cheapest I've seen is about $45. Yes, a HUGE part of that is taxes, but another BIG part is the tobacco companies jacking the prices to (a) make up for the settlements they've had to pay, and (b) to make up for the lost revenue as the tax increases make people stop smoking. :|

So, how ya doing?

Tomorrow will be eight weeks for me, overall it has been much easier than I ever imagined it would be. Even had a trip to Vegas this past weekend and sat in the casino drinking with smokers all around and didn't slip once.

Tomorrow will be two weeks for me. It's fucking hard but worth it. I absolutely love that I don't reek of the shit when I sit next to a pretty gal, and don't have to carry chewing gum around to unfuck my breath. Flatmate's friend left quarter of a packet stuffed down the side of a couch cushion and I stumbled upon them this morning. Damn it was tough not to take just one to go with my fresh cup of coffee, but I held out. Good luck to the other quitters.

You don't believe in nicotine addiction? You know it's probably the most well understood addiction in medicine, right?

You're not going to quit. I can tell because you're marking the time. If you're done...you're done. No reason to mark how long it's been in groups of 7 days or groups of 4 weeks...
