Now that's just spooky...

3.5 weeks for me, haven't touched a cig. Feeling pretty good.

I learned recently that my grandfather used to be a smoker back in the day. When my grandmother died of cancer, he quit cold turkey (this was back in the 70's). I always thought that was amazing and sad at the same time.

I started slipping last week, smoked 4 cigs since last monday. After almost 70 days without one I became frustrated with the fact that the urge's would not go the fuck away. Dunno what happens next, I might join a support group or something..

That sucks for you. As I'm sure you already know, the best thing to do is just start the quitting process all over.

Good luck buddy... I'm hoping to quit November 1st. I prefer the european "i've given up" to the american "I quit"

You had a lapse. No biggie. Just realize it and get back on the wagon. You can do it.

Thanks for the encouragement, it's not too bad yet, I've only allowing myself one a day when I walk the dog but I fear where it will wind up,-full-blown relapse..

As I mentioned last week, and was lambasted for it, you don't sound like you're ready to quit. You need to mentally prepare yourself for it.

I'd say go ahead and smoke. It's not going to hurt you after smoking for x amount of years, but be thinking about quitting and needing to quit. That's your short term goal; mental preparation.

Next, set a date that you're going to quit. Keep this date in mind via a calendar, date book or an electronic method. The thing is to keep this date fresh in your memory to remind you of the upcoming, life-changing day.

Once that day arrives throw away all smoking paraphernalia; ash trays, lighters, lighter fluid, flint, left-over cigarettes, 'points' (Camel cash, UPCs, ...). Don't keep anything. You're done. You won't need it.

If you've smoked indoors, the next thing you'll want to do is a 'spring cleaning' of your home. As a smoker, you may not be aware of it, but your furniture, linens and drapery all stink. Wash them. Also, wash all of your clothing including your jackets and coats. This is done to get a fresh and clean start to your new lifestyle.

One thing that will not help you is hanging out with people that smoke or getting yourself into situation where people all around you are smoking. You might want to cut down on taking some breaks at work or go somewhere else during your breaks, but down stand around with the other smokers.

Since you're starting new by getting rid of something, now would be a good time to take up a new hobby. Something you've always wanted to do or something that you've been putting off. Woodworking, learning a new instrument (may I suggest guitar? ), gardening, fitness,...

Anywho, good luck...again!

I had fairly strong urges ~9 months after stopping. The urges always came when with a smoker. Staying away from smokers (and 'smoking' situations) helped a lot. Now, almost two years later, I don't have any problem being around smokers. In fact, I like the aroma. I also like the fact that clothes, the house, etc. don't reek of smoke.

I'm one who needed to be ready to quit. After a couple of months, it sounds like you're over the physical addiction. You need to work on the mental. Try doing something oral when you have the urge. I used to brush my teeth - a lot. I also jogged for a while. Don't be too hard on yourself. The only thing harder than quitting smoking is giving up food.

don't give up buddy!

for me when I was trying to quit it was always the 39th day. Each time. Not sure what it was about that day, but I would always give up. I have been quit for 5 years now, but have fallen off the horse a couple times for about a week or two at a time.

Jan will be 5 years since I quit. Smoked up to 2.5 packs a day for 20+ years. It's hard, but you CAN do this. One day at a time..........

don't get down on yourself because you slipped up. Just forgive yourself and move on. Stay committed!

I know what your saying makes sense about "ready to quit" but you might have to be as stupid as I am and allow yourself to become addicted to nicotine to understand, a smoker is never really, fully, "'ready to quit". He/she might ready to give it a try but to think that a "magical" day comes around where quitting is suddenly possible where it wasn't before, I don't agree. Whyquit.com's view is the same as mine, any day is just as effective as the next to give it a shot. Thanks for your suggestion's (some good one's), I haven't given up yet..

I didn't quit, I just stopped because after my soccer games I was wheezing like a mofo. Soccer means more to me than a cigarette, and I want to get in better shape, so I dropped the cigs.

When you say quit, you're really pushing yourself to stick with something, even if circumstances might change. What if one day, cigarettes were the antibody to deal with a fatal disease brought over from Asia? You'll regret having quit.

Here we go guys, this is when shit gets real. Today marks 6 weeks since I quit (I'm more active in this thread than the OP lately ).

Tomorrow I head home for the summer. I'm stopping at a friend's place to sleep on the way, and we'll no doubt enjoy a few brewskies together. Well he's a big smoker and whenever I hang with him I invariably go through a full pack while consuming large quantities of beer. Drinking with him without having a smoke is going to be tough.

And then comes the real test. I'm living with my parents for summer, both of who are relatively heavy smokers. They smoke inside the house, often. It's gonna be really tough but I'm up for the challenge.
Bring it on.

Good job! 6 weeks is huge. Keep it up, and soon it will seem like years since you've smoked.
