I heard that if u quit your job you will not be entitled to unemployment or cobra. So, if you're unsure of your prospects or just wanna be safe, whether or not you will file unemployment, its better to get yourself fired.

any one who knows for sure?

I dont think you can get unemployement benefits unless you get fired through no fault of your own. Imagine all the pople getting jobs, not showing up, then getting a check.

Might also depend on the company.
If you have certain benefits (eg: company car) you may get penalised for quitting, but if you're fired, the penalties may be differet/less since you didn't end the contract, the company did.

If you quit, then your boss doesnt have the chance to tell you that your lazy/worthless or whatever you would be fired for.

Also if you're fired, it may hurt future job chances more than if you quit.

try to get "laid off" and not "fired." if you get laid off it's easier to get unemployment.

Laid off>quit>fired.

You only get unemployment benefits if you are laid off, barring extraordinary circumstances. Quitting is better than firing, if it comes to that choice. I've had a lot of job applications in the past ask if I had been FIRED, and why. It's easier to explain quitting than getting fired. Laid off is a no-fault way of separating from a job.

In texas you can get unemployment benefits if you quit your job, after waiting 6 weeks i think.

In Oregon, you can get unemployment if you get fired too. You can get unemployment if you quit too. I did temporarily on both occasions. Of course, I was fired because I refused to succumb to their gestapo tactics and the state found out about it when I went to them after getting fired. They launched an investigation and I got a letter in the mail after that from the employer kindly "reminding" me that I had signed an NDA and that I "didn't have to" tell anyone anything about being employed there.

Oh man... the joys of knowing the labor laws and sticking it to employers who knowingly and flagrantly violate them

I used to do health benefits for NYS.

Cobra for family (Family is considered 2 or more people) is $800 and change a month.

Yeah, that is the "extraordinary circumstances" I'm talking about. I personally got unemployment in Washington/transferred to Oregon when I quit a job. The job was due to be phased out in the fairly near future, so the employer backed me up on my claim.

I'm in California so i guess if its that hard to get unemp anyway, then i guess no harm quitting vs fired. Besides quitting saves more ego.

I could be wrong, but I thought COBRA costs were determined by the coverage you had while you were employed. Basically, you get have the same health benefits you had while you were employed, but you pay the whole cost. So if you were with a company that had cheap insurance (high copay, high max out of pocket, etc.) then you'd pay less for COBRA than if your company had a very expensive plan.

Fired or laid off? There is a big difference.

That is a meaningless statement. What insurer? What level of coverage? How many dependants?
