Quitting my job Tuesday!

Finally. Quitting ma job, which I hate, as a civil engineering tech Tuesday.

For 2 years, I've been putting up with a culture of laziness, incompetence, and disrespect. It's in guberment and while there are hardworkers, it's filled with people phoning it in, collecting a paycheck, slackers, insecure people, etc. I've actually been there just over 3, but the first year was okay. I could put up with this.

I'm underemployed and overqualified by two degrees there - job requires a 3 year diploma, I have a 4 year bachelors and master's degree (just got this) in engineering. I could put up with this for the stable paycheck and regular hours. And I like the "company" as a whole, and pay is $$$$ for more senior positions.

As a tech, all the engineers, including new grads, walk around with an unearned snobby attitude. I get looked down on, and get denied training, funding (e.g. licensing, grad school), and other opportunities. I can deal with this.

As an overqualified tech, I've been asked at least 20 times "why aren't you an engineer?". "Because they didn't hire me?" Getting asked that and dealing with a "wtf" face gets annoying after the 10th time. I was okay with this.

Then Friday, some f*cking asshole I'm doing a project under at another office calls me up and says that work isn't getting done, it's "slow", and he doesn't know if it's the way I do it "or...". Love how he left the "or" open. This job I'm doing "slowly" is inventory of road assets for an entire county... The clueless f*ck thinks that I should be able to count stuff across 300+ km of road faster. I was just assigned this huge workload a week earlier and have been ploughing through everything ASAP.

Funny thing is that I wouldn't have had to do this if his incompetent ass kept his records current - he tells me he knew they sucked, but never bothered to tell me. Also, I'm just an extra hand, and two other people under him are actually responsible for all this work. He also wants me to go up to his office an hour's drive from my current office, so 2 hour commute each way, versus 1. It's suppose to be "more efficient" - after his call, sounds like he just wants to watch me.

I can deal with a lot of crap, but this clueless weasel just put me over the edge. Going to bitch this guy out Tuesday to my (and his) manager, then hand in my notice. Got a part-time offer at a start-up next month. Lower pay, but more potential, and I know the owner.

End blog!

Cliffs:
- Hate job, but put up with for 2 years (been there 3).
- Bad company culture, bad coworkers, overqualified, underemployed.
- Weasel rides and blames me for something not really my problem.
- Leaving.

Welcome to the real world. Not a wise move to quit and run off for a part-time position, IMO.

Yep, it's why I've been so afraid to quit. Lose a stable paycheck with benefits and a pension on the verge of another recession.

Luckily, I save most of my paycheck and have enough to live on for years. Even more lucky is I have no debt and minimal expenses.

Goes to show how much I hate the place. Hopefully the P/T turns into F/T, which I've discussed with the owner - he actually proposed F/T, but needs more time. The P/T was a comprimise so theres no hole in my resume.

I used to work for a civil firm. It sucked ass. It was a bunch of people who just stabbed people in the back. It was all politics and no engineering, but they always acted like they made the world move. In my group, it was always, blame it on the new guy. while the only thing I really learned was that you need to set stuff up so when stuff goes wrong, you do not get blamed. I dealt with it for 3 years. As an EE, it sucked even worse because when I left, i had only skills that were applicable in that field. It took me a year to find a job outside the civil field. I work my ass off at my current job, but I am treated a million times better and I actually enjoy it.

You're another mommy and daddy enabling. Why would anyone be jealous of either of you?

You both haven't had sex aside from paying it for it directly or she's fugly.

Ya, I am living with mommy and daddy. It gives me the chance to save money, and having money means freedom to leave any job I feel like, and I will never have to suck dick or bend over for anyone.

Made some poor decisions in your life, dude? Why you mad bro?

Edit: Oh, and FYI, I meant I have enough saved to live on my own for years. That or I save a bit more, buy a house... who knows?

That sucks. Most of the people where I work are reasonably nice, but there is a cut-throat culture.

For this job, I covered my ass well. All my hours are accounted for, I mapped everything I inventoried, sent regular e-mails, etc.

Thinking back now, I think the f*cker knew what he was doing when I emailed him, and he would almost always ask me to call him - he's old and I thought it was a culture/preference thing. No hard evidence that he's a prick now. Won't be making that mistake for my last 2 weeks.

The other major reason I'm leaving is that I just don't know if I want to do the engineering thing. Money is alright in an absolute sense, but for all the work and liability, it kind of sucks.

Good luck. I know little about your situation but truly would if I could stay working where you are now but the bare minimum until the PT position you are trying to do turns into FT. To be completely candid a PT position at a start-up is as close to unemployed as you can get; it's not secure at all. Having savings is good but savings don't fill in the gap on a resume.

It may work out for you though. I'm biased to structure and predictability and not one to take risks professionally.

For one, I actually think you made the right move. It's not like you will be jobless. You've got a PT job lined up.

It's all about happiness at the end. If you have been saving up, you can afford to quit a job like that. I applaud you for doing it.

Now, turn that PT job into a FT job, will ya?

I feel for 'ya, I help out operations in our co. (I'm in manufacturing) by doing cycle counts for inventory. We use SAP and bar codes so all year long I've gotten a lot of bins done, last week manager of operations. calls a meeting, all the counts we've done so far are "no good" because some 20yr old auditor thinks they are not "transparent" enough and we are at ground zero and have to start over with "blind" printouts AND enter the data for each barcode (39) digits by hand. WTF, I told him no one does inventory like that anymore, everything from baby food to ball joints has a UPC code for a reason IT'S FAST, not only that my own managers won't even put up a scrap in my defense, (use him all you want), bunch of balless, job scared kiss-asses. HR is a joke too, I've been drug tested SEVEN times in 3 years, random my ass, they've got their "go-to" people now (ones who have tested neg.) and that's who gets "picked" every time. Last week I overfilled the cup then blasted it with thick, dark summer pee, it stunk, the pee-girl (who they've now put IN the bathroom) says in a nasty voice, "overachiever I see", "just for you baby" I shot back and left. I friggin HATE my job now but unemployment around here is like 11-12% so I cant afford to walk out, SUCKS...

I support IMP here, just got a feeling he will end up the big winner in the end. Why be a whore for a paycheck when job satisfaction is far more important.

I went through the phase you described last month. Early last month, I humped everything I wanted to keep home little by little because I just had it... then I freaked out that I would lose a regular bi-weekly paycheck, benefits, and a pension. So, in my head, I kind of convinced myself to stick it out until I found a new job, hopefully internally.

Then something happened this past week. On Monday or Tuesday, I dropped out of a grad program (yes, a second master's) I was suppose to start in September. Something just clicked and I knew that as long as I stayed in school, I wouldn't really bother to look for a new job. Dropped out before starting, lost my $500 deposit, but "saved" $4k tuition.

I don't know, I think I hit my breaking point - emo - and the risk of a PT, unsecure job is now worth it. And some backstory: I've actually been working at my soon-PT position casually for 3 years. If it works out, the job would be at my education level, and I get some business expereince... or I'll see you at Starbucks.

And some more backstory on my company. In the three years I've been there, I know one person who went on "stress" leave and commited suicide recently; another who told me she hated the place, called in sick once a week, then went back to India; and one who just went on stress leave in June after being transfered to another office with a 1 hour longer commute thanks to inter-office politics. Can't just be me...
