I need to quit.

It's gross. It's unpleasant. It smells. It killed my taste buds. It's expensive.

I'm young, so there's hope lol.

How did you guys quit? I've tried...but the headaches from quitting suck and everytime I go more than a few hours, the cravings and the headaches are absolutely terrible. Last week, I made it 24 hours without smoking...but I got really pissed off and stressed about something, and had to smoke. Total fail.

Any help?

First, sounds too simple I know, get rid of all your cigarettes.
Second, you can get past the physical pain and suffering in 72 hours.
Third, you have to focus on doing things differently, no more auto pilot.
That's it. Your brain will do it's best to make you return to smoking. So, take a different route to work, go to different stores, if you walk, ride instead. What you are doing is creating new thought patterns that do not include smoking. It takes effort and concentration because habit is the hardest thing to change.

P.S. There is no easy button. Make your mind up that you are going to feel like shit for 72 hours straight.

I started out on Chantix, but only used it about a week.

I honestly just came to the conclusion that I was *not* going to give those fucking cocksuckers any more of my money...and in this case, "those cocksuckers" is used to denote the fucking wholier than thou proponents and beneficiaries of "sin taxes".

Haven't sucked a butt since 9/11/10 (seemed strangely poetic to me...or at least easy to remember :sneaky

i stayed away from bars and pool halls for a few months until i felt "normal" not smoking

7 months and counting!

you can do it, it just sucks at first

I never smoked just drank. I ran 6x a week solved that problem after leaving puddles on the track a few times. I bet running one hour a day will fix smoking too.

Chewing gum is a solution (although at one point it proves to be a nasty habit)

I just stopped smoking. There isn't anything magical about it. Once you set your mind to it - anything is possible. I really "wanted" to quit though. It doesn't take superior willpower just a little realization that YOU control what you want to do. Just don't smoke anymore. Right now. You aren't saving anything by finishing up that pack, so why wait? Your only deluding yourself by "savoring" the last one. Just don't smoke anymore. By not having a set date or a "last one" you reduce the buildup and its more like a surprise to your addiction. Just don't smoke anymore, get rid fo your smoking shit, and stop hanging around your smoker friends for a week.

It gets really tough from 72-144 hours (72 hours is a magic point where you no longer have a physical addiction). The next couple days get rough as you "relearn" how to live without tobacco. Its not that hard, you do everything you used to do, you just don't smoke while doing it.

I tried this year went for 5 weeks without smoking but reason I started again was dealing with annoying people every 5 seconds and being bored alot.

The best thing to do is try nicolette lozenges and chew gum wile trying to stay active and make sure you have plenty of things to do. the minute you start getting bored your going to miss smoking.

what worked good for me was nicolette lozenges and gum i would take 2 lozenges a day and chew gum the rest of the time.

Smoke one, then take some ipecac.

Go hang out with some folks with emphysema. Dad has it, smoked for 50+ years. Can't even water the grass anymore. Running back in H.S. and played 1 year at Clemson (dropped out) 5'10" 205 lbs. Now, 125lbs on a good day. Looks like he just got out of a prison camp.

Good luck.

<----- See my bad habit. Keep the avatar to remind me what addiction I quit.

Willpower, willpower, willpower. Create a quit date. Tell everyone you know you are quitting. Throw ALL of your shit away. Buy gum, mints, toothpicks, dumdum suckers, candy, have it at home/office/car. Start working out. Don't go out for at least a week.

You can beat it!

Cold turkey. Seems like if you aren't serious and focused enough to stick with it the first time, it gets progressively harder.

I used nicotine gum to help with the physical part of it. It is strong, not necessarily bad tasting but it's not something that will become a habit in itself. The hard part is the psychological side. All the associated habits need to be broken, like a cigarette after meal, w/ coffee, every major/minor emergency etc.

LOL this was probably at least 50% of my motivation. NOT GIVING THOSE FUCKING ASSHOLE PRICK TOBACCO PEOPLE ANY MORE MONEY! I got soooo pissed about how much money I was giving them to fucking kill me!!!

QuitSmokingMessageBoard is great.

http://whyquit.com/ is another that I leaned upon heavily.

Bottom line - of all the people I know that smoked as much as I did - the majority of the ones that stayed quit - are the ones that cold turkeyed. THere is one exception - my own mum. She patched and it actually worked. I know a lot more failures that are still smoking - some with the patch on. I know a lot of nicorette and lozenge addicts too. I tried the NRT's with outstandingly high failure rate (well it was 100% failure cuz I stayed smoking in the end).

Cold turkey is the way. I'm fairly convinced (tinfoil hat) that NRT is a ploy. Some sort of sick joke to try to extract even more money from the poor smoker at his wits end.

The tobacco people have inflicted SO much harm on actual people it is ridiculous. They actually convince people that they are "choosing" to continue their addiction! That they enjoy it! Its unbelievable that they are allowed to continue to exist.

Gotta go to work and stop ranting.

I quit 3 years ago at 28 right before i separated from the Air Force. I smoked for abut 12 years, when i quit i was up to about a pack a day and a can of snuff a day. I really didnt want to quit, I just got tired of my mom always nagging me, plus knowing i was getting out, my wife and i wanted to cut down expenses.

We both quit together using chantix. Honestly, it was incredibly easy. I started taking it and kept smoking (which is what they tell you to do). Within a week i was absolutely disgusted by cigarettes and the smell and had no desire to smoke. We kept taking the chantix for another couple of months and weened off of it. Three years later still havent smoked, nor do i feel the need to smoke.

The hardest part for us was just getting out of the habit of smoking. The cigarette right after dinner, the cigarette on the way to work, the dip i always had in while playing xbox or at work, etc.

I can definitely reccomend chanitx, it worked great. The only drawback was the really fucked up vivid dreams I had. I still remember them to this day. It was always the same thing. I got to sleep and then start building this massive tower of steps, it just kept going up and i never finished. Got to the point where sometimes i didnt want to go to sleep becuase i knew i'd have to go back to building that stupid fucking tower.

Just my two cents.

word.

Cliffs:
Smoked 12 years
Took chantix for 3 months, stopped smoking after first week
Crazy dreams on chantix
Still smoke free 3 years later

I used the patches. They aren't cheap but cheaper than smoking in the long run. Walmarts got the cheapest ones. They don't work for everyone but did the trick for me.
