Qwest DSL customers free upgrade

Current Qwest DSL customers who have 640K download service can call Qwest between now and Feb 27 to have their service upgraded to 1.5 Mbps for free. Customers who don't call by Feb 27 will have to pay for the upgrade.

I can confirm this in Utah. I called them last saturday and they are going to upgrade my services today. You might want to check on the modem that you have.... I had the Cisco 675 and it wouldnt work with the new technology so I had to buy a new one that Qwest sells for around $70. I loved my cicsco.. had it for 6 years w/out a hiccup.

Just called Qwest and the person said that the upgrade was going to be automatic and that no modem upgrade (Cisco 675) would be necessary. Hope he knows what he's talking about.

Not sure about the 'no modem upgrade' but I've read on dslreports that you need to call in before feb 27 or you will have to pay for the upgrade.

I called last Wednesday and they said by this Wednesday I should be running at the new speeds.

I also heard that the upload is more like 1Mbps, 896Kbps is almost a "worst case scenario" in most places.

Called Qwest back and was told that the Cisco 675 will not work with the speed upgrade. Must get the Actiontec modem gateway. Story seems to change depending on who you talk with.

I can assure you the 675 will not work as it doesn't support DMT. I'm getting upgraded next Tuesday. Can't wait

6 years is a long time to have the Cisco 675 considering it didn't exist back then. At least assuming Cisco couldn't released the re-badged Netspeed SpeedRunner 204 before they actually purchased the company in '98. Just giving you a hard time

Or just make it easier on yourself and order the 1.5m and save the hassle. It's not just a free upgrade (AFAIK), it's free install for new service too. But who knows. The best thing would be to call them and ask yourself!

This is hot, and I am in (CS rep said it should take 5 days to activate) as an MSN/Qwest customer.

Got in as well, it's a $5/month increase for me, but it is up to 1.5Mb down and 1.2Mb up, well worth a $5/month increase IMHO. Thanks!

edit: The UPGRADE to this service is free (waived) but the service is $5/month more than the regular 640/256 service. (at least it was for me)

I called about the upgrade, and you have to get the new modem, but the 5 day activation is misleading. They have to turn you off for 5 days, before they and put you on the new system. They told me it took that long for the "electrons to settle down in the software".

Redviffer: I can verify in UT it's the same as the 640/272 service.

Waterskier1: Myself and others I know haven't experienced that. That would suck though

May have found an answer to my own question....

Dslreports states:
According to Qwest, 80% of existing customers who had Qwest 640kbps DSL should qualify for the upgrade to Qwest DSL deluxe (load coils, distance, and assorted other line conditions could ruin the fun). It also appears that Carrierless Amplitude/Phase (CAP) users may have to upgrade to Discrete Multitone (DMT) to take advantage of the upgrades.

I found this site that states the the arescom 800 is DMT

I upgraded from 640k to 1.5M today in New Mexico. I asked the CSR if this was automatic for 640K members, and he stated that it wasn't. You MUST call in and request the free upgrade to get it.

Thanks, I'll have to double check and see what exactly I'm getting charged for then.

Qwest lists on its site 1.5M service for $39.99 in my area, so it looks like a $5 increase per month for me too.

EDIT:
Just ordered: $5 increase per month, but well worth it.

Hmmm Qwest just provides my DSL line I don't use MSN as my ISP, use another local provider. I don't think the upgrade will work for me

It'll work fine. As long as your ISP will support it, which most should. Just call them. Several of my local ones do.

That's the problem I ran into, My local ISP will suport it but they aren't sure how it's going to effect them just yet, All they know is it's going to cost them more money.
