My friend is buying a qx 6800 extreme really soon. I told him no man dont get it now because it will waste your money. he doesn ot do video editing ro anything hes just a gamer. I also told him jst get a e6700 for like 350 and OC that stuff to the 6800 because intel is coming out with their new CPU very soon.. am I giving him the right advice?

Yes, that's the right advice. Maybe even e6600, that oc's about same as 6700 and $100 cheaper. But if he wants to blow his $1000, don't fight it it's not your money Of course later you can make fun of him when 3 months after he bought his processor, a $400 processor outperforms it

If he's a gamer...have him buy an E6400, overclock it to 3.2Ghz and use the saved money on a 2nd video card and do SLI (8800GTX/GTS?)

If he really has need for the quad core, have him get a QX6600. Those can be had for around $500 last I checked and is damn near the same CPU. Compare that to the E6600 and it's just a tad more than twice the price for quite literally twice the CPU.

dude, you guys.

1. how does he expect to get a QX6800? Are you talking about a complete system? Because thats the only way you can buy one unless you live in a different country then USA.

QX6800 to my knowledge is VENDOR only because intel is requiring them to put exotic cooling on them. Unfortunately, half the vendors solutions SUCK crap, and a Ultra120 would beat it. But Where does your friend expect to pick one up?

Also, if you or your friend have no idea on how to really overclock, STEP AWAY FROM THE QUADS. Expecially until penryn comes out. You cant handle the heat from a 65nm Quad when overclocked. Just trust me on that.

Also Quads are very limited right now. Board issues, and heat problems. If your friend doesnt video encode / WCG crunch / F@H. Theres really no point in going quad. He wont see/feel a difference from quad -> DC.

I would like to see ANYONE OC a qaud to 3.7ghz ...

Maybe you should tell your friend that with current c2d's processors, hell with the fastest single core processors, games are GPU bound, and not CPU bound.

you should tell your friend to stop wasting his college fund!

haha....some peeps are really 'retards' a complete waste of bucks IMHO! I dont even know of games that have as requirements Quad cores!! or that do in fact benefit from it

Well, Supreme Commander claims to utilize all 4 cores,
and I bet Oblivion wouldnt mind the extra "umph" ("double-up umph umph!" )

Wait for QX6850. Quads will overclock a bit better using the 1333 strap on current boards.

My QX6700 runs 24x7 at 3.73 GHz.

Vapochilled of course, but that still counts as fullfilling your "ANYONE" request.

If he has 1000 to blow on computing parts 8800 GTX SLI would be a pretty good options at 1100USD And hten maybe only 224USD on a E6600.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA...

I think DDTung at XS forums has one clocked at 3.7ghz on water.

He has a 3.6ghz on AIR.

My X3220 is limited by the board. His X3220 which has almost the same stepping on a asus P5D does 3.6 on AIR.

GAh.. need to pick up the bearlake P35 board and let loose this monster.

Tell your friend the X6850 will cost 285 in about 3 months. That itself should be worth the wait if he wants one.

EDIT: incase you guys didnt pick up, the op made a mistake. He ment X6800 which is a Dual Core.

NOT a QX6800 which is a vendor only quadcore.

Im still laughing at why people are telling him its bad, when you cant even get the chip unless you live outside the US. Its VENDOR only people. :\

If it wasnt, id get one right now. ive seen screenies of that thing doing 3.8ghz @ 1.47V actual.

aigomorla is right, as usual, the Qx6800 is vendor only indeed.

but this guy is talking about a DUAL core x6800. my opinion? have your buddy purchase an e6700 with a decent board, mem, air cooler..and over clock it. Take the money he saved, and purchase a 2nd video card.

The HIGH clock speed youll get from the e6700 coupled with the SLI gfx setup will do wonders for your GAMING frames/s...you did say he was an avid gamer. Most games now and in near future will appreciate the high clock speed and high-end gpus much more than any quad core(but low clock speed) setup.

games = GFX cards more then CPU.

a E4300 @ 3.0ghz OC, which is very very small and almost gaurentee'd. With 2 8800GTX in SLI will seriously and horribly spank any quad core running a 7600GT. only in games.

You wanna take my X3220 in WCG Bionic Points. Good luck there pal. I think Yoxxy and idontcare is probably the only people who posted on this thread that could. :]

QFT in a very big way. Anyone seriously considering an Intel Quad Core should wait for the QX6850 (and hope it's not going to be vendor only). Buy yourself an E6600 or E4300 to tide yourself over.

Op said he mistyped. It should of been X6800. The currently Extreme Edition C2D. Not a QX6800

The 1333FSB strap processors will run on a g0 stepping im guessing. Intel will go with the new stepping this september.

But the TDP was only decreased from 105 -> 95 If you ask me, thats not much of a decrease compared to penryn, who sits on a 45nm die.

If you currently own a quad core, its not worth upgrading to the 1333fsb strap unless you got serious cooling <water, AIR is never considered hardcore cooling> to push that cpu even harder.

Bah, people just stay away from quads until you absolutely need them, or until the 45nm die is available.

This is my 2 cents to you guys. And yes I am a quad owner. I'll have my second soon in september as well.

Yoxxy any chance on a ES chip your going to get your hands on? it would be interesting to see how much heat that sucker will drop. Dino's QX6800 @ XS forums is absolutely amazing.

I have said this before and I will say this again. You are going to ruin your Vapochill. That is WAY WAY too much heat load for 24/7.

Word. i second yoxxy's statement. Unless your phase was tuned for quadcores, You'll burn it out. And if its tuned for quad, then nice setup you have there.

Quads are also known to exceed 226W TEC's btw. even the 400 watters cant bring a loaded Quad to the negatives.
