Detroit, MI (AHN) - The Penske Automotive Group (PAG) is no longer buying General Motors' Saturn brand after partnership negotiations fell apart, the Detroit-based firm announced Wednesday.

The development cast a pall of gloom on 350 Saturn dealers and some 13,000 of their workers, who now stand to lose their jobs as GM returned to its original plan to stop making the car this year if no buyer is found.

GM and Saturn dealers were expecting businessman Roger Peske to close the purchase deal this week and the news came as a shock to them.

Peske issued a statement citing PAG's deal with a third party was rejected by its board of directors.

Last June, Peske offered to buy Saturn giving dealers and their employees hope to keep their businesses and jobs.

my sc2 has 180k miles on it and is still going strong. It has been by far the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Its too bad they went away from the independent designs and started making gm clones. That is what killed them imo.

I love my Saturn, their customer service is the best of any brand by far. Sucks to see them go, they were inexpensive but not "cheap"

They made mechanically good cars, but their styling was terrible until the last few years. The Sky is on my "want to own someday" list

On a side note, that commercial they were running where that guy said "We make cars people want to buy!" made the company sound like a whiny loser. If you are---why aren't people buying them?

I'm not sure why people say Saturn didn't make good cars. They did make good cars. I just think they screwed themselves by keeping the same design for waaaay too long in the beginning.

QFT...my 96 SC2 was a great car. People make fun of it here, but in real-life most didn't know it was a saturn.

My wife's bought new 2000 SL2 is still going strong at 100k+ miles. Clutch may need to be serviced soon (first time), need to check her brake linings (never replaced yet), and the only other maintenance has been oil changes / tires plus one upper motor mount / idler pulley which were under $75 for both.

The main problem I think with GM in general was when in the 60's and later they decided to have inter-corporate competition/overlap. You can't have 2-3 companies selling the exact same car with a different name and expect to do well overall.

That would be because Saturn is a brand and not a financial entity.
