Your power supply probably just has some bad capacitors. Replace those and it should still work. But it's so old that is lacks all the extra connections that newer machines have.

My Q6600 is still running ok, and I'm still complaining about the kids leaving it on and complaining that the thing doesnt go to sleep when it should and it uses to much electricity and costs too much money to run bla bla bla. Come to think of it that machine is kind of like a kid... it doesnt go to sleep, it costs too much money, etc.

My Q9450 is still doing great but it's finally hit its limits with BF4.

Oh well, I'll have to look into some upgrades next year.

The Core 2 generation really was great.

I wouldn't put a PSU that old into a new machine especially one I had to replace parts on. You can get a decent new one which runs far less risk of A: breaking in the future leaving you withough a PC while you replace it or B: breaking and taking out another component with it.

Besides any new PSU will be more efficient and should more than pay for itself if he keeps it the same amount of time he had his last one.

Gotta agree with this. Something may be technically feasible, but might also not be worth the time, money and risk involved. Considering how inexpensive you can get really solid PSUs for on deal these days, I wouldn't risk it and just upgrade to a nice modular PSU with a beefy 12v rail.

Apparently some of the new CPU's (like Haswell) need "approved" power supplies for certain power states, etc. With the Antec Basiq so cheap, there's no reason not to.

Why save $30 to risk blowing your hardware into their component atoms? :twisted:
