And soon after NVIDIA releases NV30, Ati will release the .13 micron refresh of R300. Point is that right now, R300 is faster. We can and should compare Ati's fastest to NVIDIA's fastest, and right now, GF4Ti4600 is it. It's not Ati's fault that NVIDIA is releasing NV30 so late. or should ati say "Here is our new product. But please, do not compare it to our competitors best product right now. You must wait untill they release their next products several months from now". Now, that's just stupid, don't you agree? Comparing different products should NOT be about which "generation" they are, they should be about what is available at that moment. R7500 is not the fastest thing Ati has, so it IS pretty pointless to compare it to GF4 (the best NVIDIA has). R300 is the best Ati has and it costs about as much as GF4 does, so comparing those IS valid.

hell, that would be a perfect strategy. Go on a 10 year product-cycle. In few years time, when your product is sub-standard, you could just say "Oh, you can't compare our product to our competitors product. Our answer to their product gets released 5 years from now". When you release a new product, you compare it to the competitors that are awailable at that moment. And right now, that means that R300 gets compared to GF4.

Even though 90% of the enthusiast crowd will WANT to, not many will be ABLE to. so many bought into gf4 that it may be economically unfeasable for them to grab another card so fast.

Why do you think that only GF4 owners will buy the R300? Majority of people do NOT own GF4! Large part owns GF3 or something even slower! I myself have GF2 GTS!

I'm amazed that so many people think that since NVIDIA is on a 6 month product-cycle, you must upgrade your vid-card every 6 months! And if ati releases faster card soon after nVIDIA releases theirs, you must upgrade to the Ati card right away! How many actually does that? very few I guess. Most do what I do: they buy a card, and use it while newer and faster cards gets released. But they don't upgrade, they wait for a while, and upgrade then. I myself am upgrading in abiut 6 months time.

The only thing that concerns me is the fact that it only has 1 texture unit per pipe when most games are using two. The other thing that concerns me is the rebuilt drivers for just the 9700 and the abandoned unified driver model. I know ATi's drivers are much better than they were before but I do still have issues with them, issues that I don't have with nVidia's drivers.

The R300 has twice as many pipelines, although half as many TMU's per pipe. Shouldn't this come out as a wash? Does it work that way? Shouldn't then the per pass favor the Radeon in this respect?

Hmmm... I go on vacation and all hell breaks loose.

Heh, this is looking good for my 2003 upgrade. Celeron with Radeon LE --> Hammer with R300. Yummy!
