I wonder if these master cards will cost more than the non-masters? If they do that will be pretty gay. Anyway hopefully ATi just pushes this stuff out the door as soon as possible.

I am wondering that too. How much does a Master X800 or X850 cost compaired to a regular X800 or X850 series card? Maybe we can get an idea from those. Unless that info is not even out yet. Dunno.

i persionally think that having an external cable is not exactly an elegant solution, why ATI couldn't do something like the SLI bridge is beyond me, particularly since you need a new mobo to crossfire anyways, so if you want to spend the $ for a crossfire board you'd probably be better served by buying a new gen card and mobo rather than a new mobo and an old gen card in master form.

Not as elegant is really relative. To some people, as long as it works, who cares?
You need a new mobo to SLI as well... Most people do not have Dual PCI-e x16 slot boards that are SLI capable.

The idea of not passing the cost of dual graphics onto those who will be using only one card makes good logic to me. But of course I am prejudiced in the sense that it is difficult to imagine wanting 2 high end cards using high end fans and power - in my system. Besides I believe the r520 is not working out and Ati is likely fast tracking to the next gen (will likely take a year though).

I guess it really boils down to how much more expensive the Master card is... If it's only marginally more expensive, then it's not a big deal.

I don't like the sounds of that. The issue of yields is always pressing at launch; the need for a 'master' card will make problems worse. What if supply is extremely thin of certain master cards at launch? It will make an already messy situation even messier.

ATI's greatest opponent right now isn't Nvidia, it's themselves.

I prefer Visa instead of Master Card....

I must say I'm not a fan of the "dongle" either.

They have a lot of catching up to do.

What exactly makes it a "master" card? The only way it will have an effect on yields is if what makes it a master card is built into the core itself, and not by a chip or something on the PCB

the external cable is necessary because it needs to be able to crossfire with x800 cards that have already been made and thus do not have anything on the pcb for an internal bridge connection to be made, while not elegant it dose allow those who already have x800xts and the such to use crossfire with their current cards.
