R520 has 16pipelines

DESPITE ALL that has been glittering like gold or pyrites before, it transpires that ATI flagship R520 cunningly nicknamed "Fudo" will feature only sixteen pipelines. The sources close to the company earlier indicated that the R520 might have even more pipes but this won't be the case. The R580 will end up with more pipes but R520 has its higher clock to fight Nvidia's counterpart.

Some of the chips will work at 700MHz or even 800MHz but yields at those speeds won't be satisfactory. Nevertheless, there is a good indication that overclockers will like this tech as will get them to run at sky high speeds.

The cards are floating around and ATI could paper launch them even now but would not be able to ship it until the first days of October. That is the rough launch date for this product launch and availability. I don?t think that you will be able to buy R520 master cards at this time but those will follow in a few weeks time after the normal ones.

The performance will be very close to existing 7800 GTX but we don?t know weather will R520 end up faster or slower than this Nvidia flagship card. However it turns out it will be close, very close.

I will be really disappointed if this is true.

Sounds like they've panicked badly for some reason.
Is the G70 really so frightening? Or is it that they had more trouble than expected with their 90nm process? With the SM3.0 capabilities? Or were all their engineers simply on vacation when this was decided?
This could easily rival NV30 for the "Most hopeless architecture" award, unless they have some major tricks up their sleeve.

0.09 micron = less heat! And there are more ways than adding pipelines to increase speed and you all forget that not all of the 7800's 24 pipelines can output simultaneously.

I dont have a problem with that, jsut that the R520 will be barely faster than a stock gtx and slower than the oced ones like the 490mz xfx one if clock for clock they are comparable.
700mhz, 16pipe=466.66...,24pipe
that's not good since the gtx isalready faster.

This doesn't mean it could still be an R4xx core does it? Just super oc'ed? ATI needs to have SM3.0 now. They can't not have it. If they pull something like that, Might as well say goodbye to them. Now the Power of 3 marketing of Nvidia did not make sense to me before, but if the R520 is nothing more than a super clocked die shrunk R480, the power of 3 marketing would make a lot more sense.

Beyond3d has been hinting the R520 wont be 24 or 32 pipes for awhile now.
16 pipes at 700Mhz would explain thier thermal issues.

This is sounding more and more like the NV by teh day.

It has SM3.0, relax! There's been enough slips in game patch released mention SM3 support the 520.

Yeah, like I said, I'll wait until the R520 is actually on the market before I finalize my decision to get one of the 7800s. As it is, things don't look good, but the Inquirer is mainly a tabloid isn't it, so you never know. If nothing else, there might be a price drop come October.
