rise4310: Youre correct. However, shipping and launching are definitely not the same (particularly for graphics companies). Keep in mind too the dates are just slightly fudged too - usually they launch 3 or 4 cards at a time; you'll have to read in between the lines there.

So R520 XT Crossfire takes 4 slots?

Anyways, I'm happy to see that R520 XL is indeed planned for a September release. Early September no less.

you could also choose R520XT CF + R520XL if you only want to loose 1 slot

That would make sense considering what they have done with memory optimizations lately in the drivers. Sounds like they may have had some big engineering meetings (hw/sftw) to map strategies and optimizations. This may be the result.

I honestly have nothing against Rollo, I just don't like his posts that show "7800 GTX SLI vs X850!" Obviously two can outperform one.

And why would a post that compares video card setups to each other "bother" you in a video forum? Isn't that what is supposed to be here? It might bother me if it were posted in P&N.

I can think of many good reasons why such a comparison would be important.... one of which would be that person with an x850 who's wondering just how much of a boost they would get with dual 7800GTXs.

Hell, once the GTX came out, the FIRST thing I looked for was to compare how much improvement there would be over my 6800GT SLI. I'm glad someone did those tests and posted the info because it helped me make my decision to keep my GTs for a little longer. The performance increase between the GTX and SLI 6800s is really only there at 20x15 and I play at 16x12, where the GTs perform just as good, if not better in many cases.

I'd ask why everyone cares if someone has a bias or not, but it sounds to me that everyone is more upset that he hasn't admitted he has a bias. Why does that matter to anyone? Geez. I'm not willing to admit that I like to spank myself and call myself b!tch when I masturbate.

I've said it before, and people keep proving it true. Rollo could post a thread asking what time it was, and the responses would be:

-"yeah, real nice flame against ATI since another hour has passed and they still haven't release R520 yet. way to start another flamewar."
-"what, your precious 5800U can't tell you the time too?"
-"fanboi!"
-"why don't you go SLI your clocks together so they can tell you the time faster, idiot"

So I assume your one of those people who upgrade simply because there is something significantly faster out there and not because you ACTUALLY need to upgrade..Had you upgraded to a 7800GTX because it was significantly faster, you'd be as dumb as those people who buy new cars every year...

So, to clarify. You're saying that people who buy new hardware, whether they 'need' it or not, are stupid? If you can afford it, and obviously some people can, how does that make them dumb? They've earned the right to spend their money the way they choose. More likely it makes you jealous because you can't.

Hell, if I had the money to blow, i'd have an SLI machine and Crossfire machine so I could use either whichever has the better card setup

well, after reading this thread (and mostly skipping the dumb flaming, give rollo a rest people!) I am getting excited about the new cards. I am slowly building up a new comp but all the main parts (and the most expensive) will wait until Christmas. At that time I will probably get a X2 3800+, DFI board, and the vid card.

I like the 7800 GT and GTX but this 520 also looks very nice. It will be nice to be able to do some waiting while the 520 launches and finds it's place. Then I will decide what card gets to replace my worthy 6800GT.
If you look at ATI's financial report you'd see that they were actually profitable for this last quarter however they had to expense employee stock options. Only after they expensed the options did they come out slightly negative. nVidia has yet to had to do this as this is a new law. I believe nVidia will have to write down their options next quarter.

Also ATI makes almost nothing on their integrated parts. The only player profitable in that end is Intel. ATI has very little market share in chipsets right now and the margins there are extremely low. Low margins is what burned this last quarter for ATI so that's not the market they want to be successful in.
It's "tricky" to make money in any business but the graphics biz has to be one of the trickest. I believe I read a couple years ago that ATI actually designed the graphics chips for Intel. Guess they dissolved that partnership?

Actually, from sources I have seen ATI is reporting constant losses...

Maximum PC
...While nVidia was announcing worldwide availability of its GeForce 7800 GTX, ATI was reporting a third Quarter nets loss of $400,000. ATI is also forcasting reduced earnings in the upcoming quarters, specifially because it doesn't have its new graphics card on store shevles.
