"ATI R580 GPU is expected to be released in Early 2006. The R580 is expected to be a refresh version of R520 with an increased number of pixel and vertext shaders (currently considered to be 24 pixel pipelines and possibly 8 or 10 vertex shaders)."

the site was pretty much right on for the previous years. maybe the new "ultra" won't give ati a run for it's money.

After a bunch of sites claimed 32 pipes for the r520, I'll just wait for some official specs before believing anything related that I read.

I can see Inquere posting soon its 48 pipes and is at 1GHZ clock speed of GPU and 1800 mhz ram. And it takes up 4 slots .

Same here. Would be nice if true, but I'm not expecting anything based on speculation. I'm not planning on ditching my 6800GT until next summer, so hopefully I'll be able to make the upgrade a big one.

Why was the r520 only 16 pipes? Yield problems, or would it have limited their clock speeds?

It just seems illogical to me that a brand new card would limit itself to sixteen pipes, though I am sure there was a good reason

The information on these pages is changed frequently as new info comes out and when they are wrong.

It just seems, in hindsight, that all of ATI's work went into the Xbox360 GPU (sometimes called R500 or R600, it's very confusing) and designing the memory controller for the R520 that they were arrogant enough to think that 16-pipes would give them the lead. While it has kept them quite competitive (and indeed is faster than the 7800GTX, but probably not the new 512MB version), imagine what a 20 or 24 pipe R520 would have been like!!!

Another possiblity is that since the new memory controller takes so many extra transistors (apparently R520 is something like 300+ Million transistors), they decided to limit the pipes to 16 to keep the die size manageable on 90nm. Of course if R580 is also 90nm (which is very well may be), that would beg the question why not try at least 20 pipes on R520. A rumour going around is that R580 will actually be a half step smaller at 80nm.

This will be interesting, no matter how it turns out...

R580 is neither 20 or 24 or 32 pipes. It has 48 "shader processors" or 48 pipes. A good guess is that it might be around 370-380 mil transistors.

R580 is 90nm but there might be cheaper version on 80nm too.

Well I would think ATI would release a R580 core with atleast 20pipeline + : )

IT should also be the faster than anythout in market just like X850XT PE was in its days ! plus more advance : )

Well, whether 24 or 32, I look forward to it increasing the pressure on NV (and decreasing my prices).

My bad - I mean to say they should have tried at least 20 pipes on R520.

But while we're talking about R580, I don't think it hast 48 shader processors. I believe that is the generation after R580 with the unified shader architecture such as in the Xbox360. I think that is R600.

R580, from what I've heard so far, sounds like a pumped up R520, like a 20/24/??? pipeline version of the R520 with the same memory controller and stuff.

We will see, but the sooner R580 is released, the more likely it is that it's just essentially 'R520 with more pipes' .

Like you said yourself, they ran out of "budget" (die space, time, cost) that they could not afford to sneak in another quad. If they would have done that then they might have as well postponed launching it in 2006.

R580 has 48 shader processors. Pete might reinforce this if he comes across this thread.

R580 is to R520 as X1600 is to X1300.
