R600 to have about 720 million transistors?

Interesting rumor if true, it would mean that ATI is either counting transistors with a method similar to Nvidia's now or increased their transistor density on the 80nm dramatically. Given that we have seen die shots of the R600 now which place it at 433mm2 or so.

I'm willing to guess that if R600 is anything akin to R500 (Xenos?), then a lot of those transistors will be on-die cache memory. Doesn't Xenos have 10MB of "cache" memory right in the die? If the 64 shaders of the R600 is true, then I don't see how it could reach 720 million transistors without including that cache count.

Just a matter of time before somebody hits 1g transistors design with these GPUs.

The 10mb of cache on xenos is on the daughter die that handles ROPS/AA etc. Even so, I don't doubt there will be plenty of cache on R600 for the same reasons as on G80 - threading/GPGPU/DB/constant buffers. It could possibly indicate R600 will also use Scalar ALU's rather than purely vector ones (you generally require less transistors to implement a function with vector logic vs scalar logic).

I believe Intel has a 16MB version of Itanium that weighs in at about 1.2 billion transistors. Of course most of it is cache.

Lots of interesting points. In any event, it looks like R600 will be a very feature packed GPU. At least, that is the hope.

Sounds like a classic case of:
Party A: "We have x of y!"
Party B: "Oh yeah, well we have Z of Y!!!...pwned n00bs!"

Either way, that's a lot of transistors.

512bit memory controller, AVIVO, a few other things like the ring bus design (they wont throw away this technology for sure), memory controller, ROPs and TMUs, composistion engine, etc

But 64 shaders?

who knows about that ? the xbox 360 gpu is also unified with 48 procs but its much smaller than the r600. thats justa rumor.

actually even this is a rumor.
