R9 290 or GTX780 ??

I thought it was a bit too fast... Then I noticed 1837 ram and I was like.. Oh well +670 offset.. 1162 boost... That's surprisingly close to what I get in my own tests against the stock Ti.

Now that's a review I'd say is doing something right

I dont think a 290 is getting close to an OCed 780 like the Classy.

Your run of the mill "aftermarket" 290 isn't going to outperform a GTX 780 Classified. Classified is selectively binned for better OCing parts and the PCB and cooler are optimized for overclocking, unlike any of the currently on the market 290s.

Classified isn't binned that much. Still need to rely on the voltage hack to make it worth the premium and all 780s have their own voltage hacks now.

At stock Classified can be match by Tri-x, but at overclocks 290 will need a lightning/matrix/toxic version to top the 780(And then it will).

Tri-X is just a better cooler on a reference board. The classified is a decked out board, which provides superior overclockability itself, but it's still down to the silicon lottery.

Thanks wand3r3r. I think the EVGA Classified GTX780 may be the way to go vs the Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 if the price is within $20 difference.

Classified isn't binned that much. Still need to rely on the voltage hack to make it worth the premium and all 780s have their own voltage hacks now.

I think its binned enough that getting a dud is less common than golden gk110s for that SKU.

That said I also think your right, with all the mods from bios to voltage the difference is less than when everything was on lockdown.

Also I think evga has 1.35v software but you need skynet for the power anyways and the volt mods allow more regardless.



I think Hawaii is too dense and based on a uarch that has never clocked as well on 28nm. I see too many sub 1200 OCs and 1.4 artifact runs at 1200 or less to believe outside of super rares it will beat even second tier 780s OC vs OC.

If it's a $20 difference and you want it for gaming only it's not even a question. They are close at stock but the classified is one of the best boards (lightning being right up there too) and the 290 may not catch up. I'm not 100% sure on 290 OC but 780 OC has proven itself since it's been out for so long.

If you consider mining it may pay itself off pretty quick, depending on the market.

The price is to high for the performance. Stock 780 can clock decent enough for 24/7

Put the extra money on something else such as another 780 or monitor or headphones.

I agree. Mine is being delivered today! My wife and I have to watch our 18 month old grandson tonight after work (Some serious Thomas the train action!) so I'll be delayed in installing the new card. I'm anxious to see what difference it makes from the 2 GTX660s in SLI.

Yea if this card offers much more quality and a more consistent performance I'll turn a blind eye and keep nvidia for the long haul. I won't be able to install mine until tonight after I get home from work. Also do 770's overclocks almost as good as 780's? I chose the gigabyte one due to its higher clocks. Can't wait to experience physx without much slowdown.

All data came from rig 2 below in my sig. Overall, I'm very impressed by the Classy. At $559 less $20 rebate it was less than a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 which never appears to be in stock at Newegg.

I went from two nice 660s in SLI to a single STRONG card.

It's nipping at the heels of my twin 670 FTWs in SLI in my 3930k rig1 below.
