Anyone else remember launch day for the R9 290 and the reviewers were all crying about how noisy the fan was and recommending everyone wait for the aftermarket coolers to become available? Yeah, [the heck with] those guys.

Except they will all had made up the cost of those cards a few times over by then. They'll be laughing harder than you.

Maybe they did, and they probably re-invested their money in more mining gear and when it all goes bust, even more laughter!

ooooh it's gonna be great. 290s for $290

Glad I got in on my 290x for MSRP. Although it looks like 290x prices are closer to the price they are supposed to be than the 290.

I could see it going bust, but only if bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were a pyramid scheme type of thing, only popular among miners.

But now that companies are allowing bitcoin transactions, why would this go bust? The company wants to transact in bitcoin because it adds 2-3% profit to their bottom line, that would otherwise be paid to Visa or other credit card vampires. Why not keep that money? Customers want to use this because it's going to save them money too. Win win, except for the middle-men vampires like credit card companies that are just a net drag on the economy.

But back to the idea of prices. I'm curious if the high demand of AMD cards has hurt Nvidia customers too, by propping up demand for Nvidia cards, so that everyone loses out on cheaper cards?

Isn't this cryptocraze awesome?

It's great for AMD/resellers!

It can also be corrected by increasing production. The demand for the current supply is extremely high, hence the higher prices. If AMD can increase production, we're likely to see a drop in prices again, or at least for the next generation once there's a "perception" reset.

I don't know who is making the extra money though. It could just be the resellers profiting off of AMD's position.

I'm sure AMD is pumping out as much as possible.

Resellers are also making money (since they bought the card at a cheaper time and reselling/upgrading).

Vendors are making money since their system's algorithm is jacking up prices to help keep them in stock which isn't working

How much you think i could get for a XFX 6970?

$250 from what I have seen others say in another thread. There is one selling for less than $200 in the FS/FT forums... Meaning you'd have to ebay it or try to sell it locally (CL) if you wanted to get anywhere close to $250 for it.

I just sold my 5870 for $200 before shipping costs. So take home I'd say is $180. I just made half my money back on a card that I bought 4+ years ago.

Where the heck did you sell yours!? I wanna sell my 5870 for $200! I tried selling it on the FS/FT forums for ~$110-120 shipped without any success so after 2 weeks or so I just started mining on it and never looked back

yeah when the r290 first came out and i read the reviews i thought it would be my next card, but with the prices for the sapphire tri-x over $550 right now and me not wanting to waste my time with the other manufacturers versions I went with the GTX 780 instead. Its going to be my first nvidia card since geforce 2 days.

How does the 5870 perform on mining? I put it on ebay. Most people are getting 120-150. Somehow mine went for $180 + ship.

This is why I can't wait for 20nm and Maxwell. At that point you won't need to wait for a 290x to get cheap again. It will have been outperformed at hopefully a similar MSRP. Prices of 780s and 780ti would likely drop too. Lots could happen when 20nm GPUs release.

Average around 400 kh/s for the 5870. Decent deal at $120 or less. Get up in the $150+ range and you might as well buy a new 7870 or a 270.

5870 is pretty damn amazing for mining if you ask me. It may be old, but it's a decent $100 mining card. Mine is a nonreference Sapphire card. I have it slightly undervolted (1.15v i believe) because it runs extremely hot at stock voltage under full load. At stock clock speeds, I am getting 400kH/s which is on par with my 7870s. 120-150 is more reasonable.

I'm about to order this 7850 2gb after debating about it all morning... Seems pretty good, most people say it can get up to 400 with the right config, which is again on par with 7870s.

270s are up to $210 on newegg now which makes them a pretty iffy deal if you ask me. When you could get them for ~$170-180 with BF4 code, then they were a pretty amazing deal.

I got hosed on this. I sold my 7970 for like $280 right before the Coin craze started.

That's why I said the $150+ plus range.

I question the 7850 getting ~400kh/s unless someone is doing some massive overclocks. Probably ~350kh/s is more reasonable.

Ha. Same for me. I sold 9 7950/7970's before the craze hit. Should have definitely kept them as I am now re-buying mining hardware. This coming summer even if I take down the miners I will keep the hardware.

Well my 1GB XFX Core edition can get up to about 370 with a pretty massive OC. So I wouldn't be surprised if the 2GB version could pull slightly more.

I always wondered if flashing one of my 7870s to a 270 or 270x BIOS would do any good since they are based on the same core, but the 270s have a significantly higher hashrate potential (up to 500 vs 400 for 7870s).

It is unfortunate for gamers. The only thing AMD can do is to increase production, but considering they likely didn't anticipate this boom it will take a few months to increase supply.

DigiTimes reported "TSMC 28nm utilization rate to rebound in 1Q14", and I suspect AMD is partially responsible with Kabini and increased GPU orders.
If only I could order off AMD and get direct to retailer price.

Here in the UK custom cooled R9 290/X cards sell for only ~£20-£30 over their reference brethren. It took AIBs far too long to get these custom cooled cards available in numbers. So for the 1st month only one retailer had them at extortionate prices. A Sapphire R9 290X three weeks ago cost £500 and now they are £440 (£20 over reference price). This is down to pure greed by the retailers.

Thankfully sanity has prevailed and R9 290 custom cooled AIB versions are available for excellent prices.
Reference R9 290 = ~£310
R9 290 WF3 = ~£330

By contrast the cheapest custom cooled GTX780 is ~£50 more expensive.

I'm not finding that the case in the UK, there seems very few 290's and 290x's in stock at big retailers and those that are in stock are reference coolers. The smaller companies that have stock seem to be price gouging, the only Sapphire Tri-X 290 (not even a 290x) in stock on Amazon is a hefty £450. Dabs don't have any 290's in stock and most of them are showing as delayed.

I'd be interested in any recommendations you have for stores to check although I'm a little restricted as I live in the north of Scotland which a frustrating number of stores categorise as a remote island location and want a daft amount for delivery.

I have a pair of 6950's at the moment and performance is starting to struggle at 1440p plus the noise from them is starting to get annoying so I'm wanting a new single card that can offer better performance than the two 6950's and is quieter. My preference has been AMD for a while but I've been considering a 780 as its reference cooler is meant to be reasonably quiet and if I decided to go down the dual GPU route again, its blower type cooler seems much better suited for that. However I have that niggling thought that performance is an issue if I want to keep running at 1440p and with a bit more patience there will likely be cheaper 290's with quieter coolers although the cryptocoin market seems very unpredictable at the moment. I did wonder if 780 Ti prices would come down a bit to take advantage of the lack of R9 290 based cards but they still seem to be holding at over £500 where they're probably not worth considering.

*Shrug* I'm happy. Sold my 7970s for more than what I paid for them 2 years ago and got a free upgrade to 780 B1s

Did something similar with mine, but went for a 780 Ti instead. Upside is that I can still mine with cudaminer and make a little money on the side.
