While we're on the subject of pricing...

Reference PowerColor 290 for $360 or Gigabyte Windforce cooler 290 for $430?

Yah, the price gouging is killing me. I can understand on the secondary market, but from retailers its kinda distasteful. At least it is encouraging me to wait for a process shrink

This.
Retailers doing this infuriates me. I mean, a small price bump due to high demand, nobody could begrudge them that. But really, the HUGE gouges we're seeing, plus the rumor that AMD is RAISING the MSRP of the 290s by $100, yeah, I'm raging.

I'll be voting with my wallet and going NVidia for the first time in many, many years. Unfortunately, I still need to purchase hardware from SOMEWHERE, and it sure seems impossible to find a retailer that hasnt gouged on the R9 cards. So I'm not sure where I am going to take my business. Amazon seems to have been pretty good about it so maybe I'm going that route for my next build.

Are you really just trying to be a [redacted]? You posted this just so everyone can ask "where are you getting these prices" (in Stock???)

Profanity and personal attacks will not be tolerated.

Lmao welcome to a free market, if you owned the stores you would be doing the same exact thing. You charge the most somebody is willing to pay.

No I'm just wondering if its worth the extra cost for the windforce cooler over ref and gigabyte's warranty.

An established retailer? No. No I wouldnt. It's gouging. Sure we live in a free market, and sure, it's LEGAL. But that doesnt mean it's not gouging. Like I said, I could see a small increase in pricing, but no, not $150 over MSRP.

If you like $$ and noise go with the reference 290. If you want to spend more $$ and get a more silent card (which pumps a lot of heat into your case) then get gigabyte.

I actually prefer reference cards for my PC because the majority of the heat is directly pumped outside of the case. With the high end (high TDP) nonreference cards this can be a major issue if you are running more than 1 card.

Seems like there are 2 choices, 1) Pay the high price and get one that's in stock. 2) Be willing to wait and order from somewhere that is not over charging but they can't keep them in stock @ MSRP.

You can order an Asus 290X DCII for $579.99 from Amazon. They'll send you an ETA after you place your order. If it's too long, simply cancel. Amazon click on where it says 3 new from $579.99

Yup. I've checked em all out. I'd be more interestd in the 280x, at its MSRP it's the best for my needs. But like I mentioned in the other thread, this situation has soured me on AMD cards. I'm going team green this time around. I cant find a 280 even AVAILABLE, let alone for its MSRP.

The fact that there are no 280s available, indicates that the price is too low. Ideally, the pricing would ensure that those willing to pay a lot could still get a card. But it's hard to adjust prices to truly reflect actual demand. That's why ebay is pretty cool - the price will just rise until the highest bidder gets his way. That's what's happening here, you are being outbid and cards are being sold to people who are just willing to pay more than you. It sucks, but that's why Nvidia cards are ready for your purchase, they aren't in as high of demand by miners who don't care about graphics performance/gaming.

I was wondering why I see all of these new cards use the in-case system. I really like the reference style blower but I'm worried about it throttling like so many other reviews. I'm not planning to use more than 1 card at all.

I have a Raven RV-02 so everything blows up and out.

I understand supply and demand. Of course. I just think as the previous poster stated that it's terribly distasteful for established retailers to raise the prices by the amount they have, I mean, HUGE amounts here. I think that if it's true that AMD is raising the MSRP of the 290s by $100 that's also terribly distasteful. I've always wanted to see AMD succeed, but c'mon, that just feels wrong.

Free market, and the can do as they like, and thankfully I as a consumer can as well and vote with my wallet. Thankfully I have a choice.

Surely BS used as a cover for these extorsions , if ever AMD
raised/raise prices they ll get lower sales elsewhere than in the US,
so far prices are quite stable here in France and generaly in Europe,
as already posted 290 start at 340e and 290x at 440e , 20% VAT incl.

Anyway first time i see the US prices higher than here...

Not at the moment they wouldnt get lower sales. They can charge whatever they want and the miners will pay it. There are plenty of miners outside the US.

Its not price gouging, because its not a hurting society. If the company wants to increase prices at the expense of selling fewer cards, and that causes their profits to fall, then it hurts them. You are angry at a company who made a card for you. You do not give the company money out of kindness and they don't build products for the love of the world. You wanting to spend the least amount of money is the same as the company wanting to charge the max amount of money. Neither is immoral or bad. If you feel the policies of AMD drive you away and into Nvidia's arms then great for Nvidia.

Remember the $1,000 Titan?

If you want lower prices for goods, spend money on things that give you the maximum return. For some people, the 290 is worth more than the 780. Right now, Nvidia cant do what amd can do for mining. Just because you dont use the cards in a way that would justify the price difference, does not equate to price gouging.

There s lot of retailers , the first one that just show the tip of a gouge pricing will lose most of its sales, also there s intra national concurrence , one can easily order from another european country and miners are not that influencial, actualy without a blatant understanding between major retailers such a price hike cant be possible.

Sweet case! I would definitely go with a non-reference card if I were you. You've got the airflow for it and you're not going to be running more than 1 card. I see no reason other than saving $$ to go with a reference card. I hate reference coolers because they get extremely loud above 60% fan speed. The non-reference cards run a lot cooler and quieter than the reference models.

So many here are being salty.

But for those who have old 5xxx series cards, those sell like hot cakes too.

Maybe. Depends if the short term gain is worth pissing off people in the long run. When I do buy a video card in the future, I'm less likely to order it from a place I saw gouging during the mining shortage.

I would have much less of an issue if they were selling them on ebay. Different expectations.

Would it be an issue, even if prices are the same on ebay vs newegg etc.? Should Newegg keep tabs on going prices on ebay, and then increase their prices when people are willing to pay a lot for something? I think right now they just automatically have an algorithm to increase prices when supplies are low and people keep buying, and decrease prices when not many people are buying or stock is piling up.

For me, I definitely dislike the mining craze and hate that it raises prices all around. But for the miner sitting there pulling his hair out because he can't find a video card anywhere, I bet he wishes that Newegg would charge more so that us mere mortal gamers wouldn't buy his card and Newegg would still be in stock. He wants Newegg to outbid us for him, and he wants to pay Newegg to do that to us. So I don't really blame newegg here. They would be foolish to give away cards at a low price, because that's just throwing money away and also pissing off miners. Now, consider, who should newegg cater to here? Should they appease gamers who buy 1 card every 2-3 years, or miners who buy every single card available in stock regardless of price? Also, I don't blame newegg because surely they are sitting there thinking "Hey, this will piss off gamers if we raise prices on AMD cards!, oh wait, nevermind, we have all the Nvidia cards in stock so there is still choice, so lets just raise prices to keep more AMD cards in stock for the miners to buy"

The case was designed with reference coolers in mind. I haven't seen a review to give you accurate numbers, but if any case should tame the reference cooler it should be that one.

So you would rather go to nVidia? Have you already forgotten the Titan @ $1K and what the 780 sold for before AMD forced them to reduce prices? That's was purely on nVidia too. It wasn't the market that drove the price up after they released. Sorry, but you aren't making sense, mate. :\

This is a problem AMD clearly needs to address, but has not. There are a lot of companies out there who will completely remove you as a reseller for selling above msrp. Instead AMD just sits there while gamers walk over to Nvidia because there are no false pricing with their cards. Meanwhile AMD thinks all of these cards being sold are for gamers... Wake up!

Save your speech for supply and demand because this goes far beyond that. At any rate, I'm unable to find legitimately priced 290s so I'm moving to Nvidia now. Mantle has been a pretty sketchy launch, cards are overpriced and AMD is still in this sort of limbo.

Hope they get it together but I'm done waiting.

What AMD is doing is purposeful. They could cripple their gaming cards for mining and sell an uncrippled GPGPU/Mining version if they wanted. They want the hype and sales.

I find it telling that even given the performance and mining craze that AMD felt they couldn't push the MSRP up for launch. Contrast that with Nvidia's mindshare that allows for a $750 780 TI and a $1,000 Titan.
