Just for reference, here are historical AMD card launch prices adjusted for inflation using the CPI calculator:
2900XT (2007) - $399 -> $450
3870 (2007) - $219 -> $247
4870 (2008) - $299 -> $324
5870 (2009) - $379 -> $413
6970 (2010) - $369 -> $395
7970 (2011) - $549 -> $570
R9 (2013) - ??

That's just AMD, but it's a clear trend. I wonder where the end point is.

this is nothing new: 8800GTX - 650$ -> ??

You know AMD succeeded when even die hard NV fans here want NV to cut the prices on the 770 due to the R280X being so competitive.

So if not for anything else, this "rebadge" is a win for consumers. Lets look forward to the 290 and 290X!!

Edit: The hype is working, Australia's largest PC hardware e-tailer sold out on 290X pre-orders: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=193_1555

Ridiculous given people have no concrete performance and characteristics yet.

You gotta love marketers.

Wow, now you can finally play in 4K! Good thing they doubled the ROP's.

So the 290(non X) should have exactly 2x the specs of 270X(HD7870) (or 4x HD7770)
1280-->2560 shaders
32---->64rops
256--->512bit

290 @1050/1400mhz should be at 200% on this graph(assuming perfect scale-ing):

ofc those will not be stock clocks and scaling will not be this good but if these specs are true these cards will be SICK

No, it will not scale so perfect like this!

Yeah that is what I said

But the HD7870 has exactly 2x the specs of the HD7770 and the same clocks except for a tiny 6.7% higher mem clock(1200vs1125).

And according to the graph I posted above, the scaling is almost perfect:

91/46 = 1.978 <--- almost 2x the performance

He is also only comparing R9 290 but R9 290X has even more SPs at 2816. 64 ROPs and 512-bit bus is incredible for such a small die chip. I can't believe they did this. Would have never guessed. If this card overclocks well, it's going to scale like a beast. R9 290 oc > 780 oc at $499?

It definitely has the potential to be 100% faster in the future when the driver updates are able to take advantage of the newly improved quad front end. IMO closer to 60% on launch driver

With these specs the R9 290 should walk all over the GTX 780 in benches. I mean the Current 280X is only 15-25% slower than a GTX 780.

In fairness, after-market 780s are 20% faster than a reference 780. But ya, it looks like game over for the stock 780. If R9 290 is trading blows with a 780, and AMD undercuts the 780 by $150, it's going to be worth the wait for PC gamers. If AMD delivers the R9 290X for less than 780 and it beats it, then it will be very strong PR boost for AMD. :thumbsup:

Very true. Looking forward to seeing some benchmarks next week and want to know how well the R9 290 overclocks. We all know the GTX 780 overclocks like a beast. Seems like a lot of reviewers don't push overclocks very hard. Who seems to best when it comes to truly testing overclocks?

Looks like I might have to refuse shipment on the 7990.

BLT has them listed

http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop...110040015014_BTF3729P.shtml&order_id=!ORDERID!

Sapphire listed for $591.62!

Gigabyte listed for $698.21

If this card turns out to be $600 MSRP its game over for Nvidia unless they seriously drop prices.

Looks like we may have to wait until next week until we can see these bad boys in the channel. I'm not seeing anything in the big three..

So what are you going to do? Wait for the R9 290 or 290X???

How can someone be enthusiastic about $600 graphics card? That is more than 3 times my budged.

Some people like to see it as company X versus company Y, no matter the situation.

I think its time I upgrade my GTX 460, but these expensive cards will never make it into my case. I'll be looking at the cheaper cards, which are always the best bang for the buck.

What about a sub $200 7950? That's probably the best deal you will see for awhile...

I've been thinking about the $268 3-slot ASUS 7970, but I want to see solid benchmarks for BF4 before purchasing. I might shoot myself in the foot for waiting if these 7xxx cards sell out, but I won't have much time for gaming for a couple months anyways...

Regardless, getting a little off-topic here. :\
