Seems like a lot of reviewers don't push overclocks very hard. Who seems to best when it comes to truly testing overclocks?

#1 HardOCP -- pushes things to the limit. Hardware Canucks and Xbitlabs tend to overclock nearly every GPU they test and both use overvolting.

I've been thinking about the $268 3-slot ASUS 7970, but I want to see solid benchmarks for BF4 before purchasing. I might shoot myself in the foot for waiting if these 7xxx cards sell out, but I won't have much time for gaming for a couple months anyways...

Regardless, getting a little off-topic here. :\

Just do a bit more research. Iirc, the Asus 7970 is voltage limited to 1.212V. MSI TF7970 BE ships with 1050/5500 clocks, it's only dual slot and is fully voltage unlocked for the same price of $268.

Their marketing slide gives us nothing to compare with. We only know the resolution and don't even know if that is average FPS.

Or what settings they are using for each game. The slide is pretty much a waste of space. For all we know every game could be running @ low settings with no AA.

Additionally, we don't know what scene was benchmarked. Totally useless, no comparison can be made.

Why are they afraid to test it against overclocked versions of the 780 that are right in the same price bracket? I guess because they view them as non-reference cards?

I guess it all depends on how well the 290X's overclock. But, I still see right through their marketing campaign.

For my part it's nice to have stock result as I like to compare multiple sites. Then if I am comparing it to another product like a 15% OC 780 I can just stipulate how fast it will be in the different review.
But if the different sites started to use non-reference cards it would be hopeless to do any kind of comparison. And if you want to compare to a non-reference you can always use tools like http://www.anandtech.com/Bench/

Because that's apples to oranges, why not test OC'd 290X to OC'd 780 and stock 290X to stock 780? Their "marketing campaign" is more like common sense.

You do realize that NVIDIA does the same exact thing right?

I'm hoping the 290X has some serious OC potential since it looks like scaling will be near perfect given the wide bus and huge number of ROPs. Is it possible that AMD will release an even larger 290X variant with more shaders? It just seems like the bus and # of ROPs is overkill.

Assuming the photo is correct, the MSI also uses a reference board. Important if people want to use aftermarket coolers, or simply trust reference boards more.

I really like how things seem to be unfolding and seriously hope AMD kicks NVidia's butt hard.I'm no fanboy of AMD (Although I do generally prefer them),but the market needs a shift in my opinion.NVidia have been leading for too long and it's starting to show. They price whatever they want and it's time this luxury is taken from them.Competition is a good thing and AMD really needs to pull ahead this time.A near-monopoly,as the CPU market has been in the past few years,is the worst thing I could imagine.
That said,NVidia may not stop AMD from becoming cocky and arrogant, but they do have to return the favor with Maxwell. For all I know, while I prefer AMD,they wouldn't be any better than AMD if their places were switched.I just hope they capture enough market share to stir up the game with GPUs again.
On topic, the 290x is shaping up to be one hell of a card.I'm kinda happy my budget got shot in the head and will not have money for a PC before November.Otherwise,I'd have gone with a 400€ 7970 and bought RAM at its most expensive. Now,with some spec adjustments (Most probably a 4670K instead of a 4770K) I'll be able to afford a much better 290x.
I just sincerely hope that AMD gets it right this time and this doesn't turn out to be a monumental mess.

I'm still trying to shake the imagery of photoshopped Jen-Hsun grilling meat on the GTX 480 heatsink. AMD had their recent moment. Other measurements aside, it's been a back & forth, a lot like Red/Blue US politics.

+1 on renewed competitiveness though. The closer to 780 performance, the better..

Looks like I'll need to do a bit of research before I pull the trigger next month, thanks for the info guys. I don't tend to change voltage, even though I know its pretty simple.

MSI R9 290 placeholder it looks like.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127758

For 10k you'd think free shipping!...Actually free shipping back to 2005 thru a time warp! Of course this statement is just joking around as it's a placeholder.

That points to availability on or near the 15th, not just reviews...which is great.

That also means there are copies out in the wild, and I am willing to bet at least one forum member is currently surfing this board and smiling with their new toy in their rig.

Maybe I will send a PM...
