I just got my Sapphire 290 installed, and the noise with the default 47% isn't what I was expecting. It's louder than my last few cards which all used custom coolers, but by no means unacceptable. And once I put on my 5.1 headphones I can't hear it at all. When I get some more time this weekend I'll start playing with the fan speeds and overclocking and will report back if pushing the stock cooler negatively affects my gaming.

Finally got some time to game a little with the 290X. Dragon Commander. Hardly as demanding as Battlefield 4, but Origin has difficulty downloading that game. :/

I did tweak the Catalyst Overdrive settings a little, but after some adjustments, I think 60% fan speed is as high as I can tolerate. 60% and lower, and its drowned out by the sound of the game. 65%, and its irritating. I also played around with the target GPU temperature too, from the default 95C to 82C. In DC, the fan moves in the 55 to 60% range, with the temps around 82C.

This card still runs warm though. For the next few months, while its cold outside, it'll be fine. But around May, I'm pretty sure I'll be seeking a better cooler for it. In the winter, the thermostat is set for 72F, in the hottest summer months, its 85F.

100% fan on one of these babies would be good for immersion for people who play flight sims

Got my 290X in today. Going to start off in uber mode and see if I can work my way down from there. Will definitely report in on my "real world" experience later.

From that I'm not seeing a problem at 55% uber mode compared to previous cards at full load i've used. A negative for sure, but not a deal stopper at all.

At 100% fan speed that is ridiculous.

Lessen here I think is that early adopters will sacrifice some noise for being first to play with these.
From what I've read in reviews (only read Anandtech's), The cards should never see 100% fan speed. The fan speed seems to be a hard limit. If the card has to throttle due to heat, it regulates GPU speed and/or voltage.

100% fan speed is really quite astonishing. Under normal use I don't think it would be an issue. After all, they will be drowned out by my H80 on high settings. That sucker is loud. It drove me insane at first, now i'm used to it and still insane.

Holt crap! AMD you morons, why do you constantly shoot yourself in the foot. WHY!?

55% is not loud. its the 65 - 70% range when noise gets loud. but even then you slap a custom cooler and its quiet and still lower price than 780.

for USD 450 a R9 290 is unbeatable in price / perf. faster than GTX 780 out of the box. faster on a clock for clock basis wrt GTX 780. overclocks well to 1200 mhz on air with voltage overclocking and beats out 1300 mhz gtx 780 and competes with the 1400 mhz classy

Doesn't change AMD being morons and shooting themselves in the foot. (But thanks for telling me obvious things, pass this info to AMD they clearly don't know this yet )

calling AMD as morons doesn't make you smarter. you have to show respect for AMD's efforts with Hawaii. If not for AMD people would still be paying USD 650 for GTX 780 and USD 400 for GTX 770. there are people who are much more experienced than you in evaluating PC tech and they appreciated AMD's effort and said AMD could have designed a better cooler. they also said that the 55% fan speed is definitely not very loud and straight out called the noise about the card as FUD. but given the price point AMD hit they were very positive. there are always going to be tradeoffs - in this case to hit certain price point an average cooler was chosen instead of a high quality cooler like the ref gtx 780 ti / titan / gtx 780.

so the choice is with the user. do you want to pay nvidia more for that cooler or do it yourself for less. you would be surprised that many would do it on their own and save the money. there are the few who are going to buy nvidia no matter what and are just here to flame the forums and the net.

At what point in my little 15 word post did you think I ever implied I was smarter?

I have to show respect to a corporation who's only intent is for me to consume their product? Why are we personifying corporations? Did I hurt AMD's feelings? It seems like I hurt your feelings, though. Any ties to AMD that would require you to jump on my opinion-post?

The only person flaming is you, good sir. I didn't drang NV into this, I didn't turn this into a us or them situation - that was all you. I'm also not a reviewer and feel my posts should oblige to forum rules and require no professionalism (as again, I'm not set out to persuade opinions or drive sales, however, I'm not sure I can say the same about you.) You're right, it is up to the user, and as a user AMD didn't sell to me (their core audience) with that godawful cooler and it is moronic in my opinion for them to continue to use a cooler that has received nothing but flak and more so on a chip that consumes more power and generates more heat than it's predecessor.

Now, if you have any other issues with my opinion?

Not sure if they're shooting themselves in the foot. They've delivered a GPU that they're selling for 40&60% of their competitors, in which they win several game benchmarks. Seems to me that they're doing a damn good job.

They designed a damn good chip, too bad right now not many notice it because of the acoustics and temps.

Price is awesome, too bad you have drop for a custom cooler if you buy ref (sort of offsetting that awesome price point).

Everyone is different, and as a Ref HD 7970 owner I do not want that cooler back in my house. No sale AMD.

So, my 290 on air isn't that loud. I don't notice it until I exit BF4. No headphones and moderate volume.

Noise measurements should be like System Power consumption tests. In an enclosed standard Case. X distance from the card really doesn't translate to Real World usage. Inside a closed Case does.

I feel like if AMD had raised the price of the R290 to $450 and slapped a good cooler on it, it would have made customers happier and raised AMD's revenue.

People may have complained about the price, the current price is perfectly fine and the smart people are waiting for after market anyways.

you are not the only guy they are selling to they are selling to a marketplace. you don't want to buy. buzz off. there are many others interested in the product and looks like AMD has enough buyers to sell out of product. :whiste:

You seem to love my opinion enough to keep trying to change it. Interesting...^_^

Wow, such strong emotions. As a long time AMD supporter, you'd figure they'd want to keep me on their side. I never thought, nor said, I was there only buyer - if I were, woof they'd be in trouble.

You'd catch more bees with honey than vinegar
