Hello everyone.
I'm concidering to buy new GPU for Guild Wars 2 game. I'm playing on 1920x1080 60Hz and need just 60 FPS all the time.
Right now I have R9 270X and at big events when there are alot of players around + massive effects etc, my FPS drop to 20-30 even if GPU is only on 50% load, and CPU around 50% aswell.
Not sure why game won't use more hardware ressources when FPS drop below 60, but I hate that FPS drop at events.

My current PC build:
R9 270X DirectCU II TOP
i7 4790 (non K version)
Z97 anniversary
16GB DDR3 1866 CL10
Samsung evo 850 250GB
Chieftec A-135 750W PSU (Bronze)

Based on raw data, R9 390 seems to be 2x better than GTX 970, but when I look at game performance benchmarks on youtube, it sometimes seems that GTX 970 perform better.
I would be using it for Guild wars 2 only, but I'm not sure if game prefer AMD or Nvidia GPU (optimisation etc.).

I will be glad for any input

Most probable you need higher single Core performance and not GPU for Guild Wars2.

Could try running msi afterburner in the background, have it log fps and gpu usage.

If gpu usage is way below 100% when fps is low a faster gpu won't help.

Sometimes nvidia cards perform a bit better with a cpu bottleneck, but I wouldn't replace a gpu because of it.

I would go for the GTX970.

The only thing you should know is GTX970 is currently selling close to or near MSRP of September 2014 when it launched. That means you are buying close to 1.5 year old technology at near 2014 launch prices. If you only play Guild Wars 2, then perhaps looking or a used GTX780/780Ti could net you better bang-for-the-buck in Slovenia. Also, if you start looking for used card prices, see what R9 290/290X sells for a better comparison. For example, if used 780 goes for $220-230 and new 970 goes for $330-350 in Slovenia, then it's better to buy a used 780 for this game.

if you're talking about big gathering of players doing world events, it doesn't matter what GPU you have

the FPS is going to tank below 60FPS

but why do I get CPU bootlenecked
i7 4790 should be great CPU for games ...
and when FPS drop at events, GPU is at 50% load, and same for CPU. It's like game doesn't want to or can't use more PC resources.
When I'm running Heaven benchmark, GPU goes to 100% at intense graphic.

No idea what should I do to get 60 FPS at events with many players around.

- Poorly optimized game/engine
- Server issues

Why do you think in a game like WoW that looks like garbage performance can drop into the 35-40 fps range on a 980 and an i7?

ALL MMOS are CPU bottleneck and uses 2-4 cores max.You need skylake for best performance avalaible now.

In GW2 specifically I can change my resolution using Vsr from 1080p to 3200x1800 and maintain the same fps. Game is totally cpu bound. Character model limit is about the only way to claw back some performance. Hopefully one day they will add support for dx12 and implement some better threading along the way.

GW2 will dip in FPS in large events no matter what you have. Yes, you can improve your minimum FPS a little bit with a faster CPU, but you will still dip far below 60 fps. And for GW2 in particular even a 980 Ti won't help with that.

Well thanks everyone for your input.
Seems like I don't need to upgrade my GPU just yet. Can only hope that GW2 will spend some money on developers to increase game performance etc.

IMO, 4790 is a pretty good cpu and skylake won't get you more than 15% improvement, where 970/390 is 200% improvement over your 270x.

Well GW2 only support DirectX 9, so that could be problem why I get huge FPS drop.

Also I read on web that GW2 doesn't support hyperthreading or multithreading, so I went into BIOS and disable hyperthreading on my i7 4790. Resault is still the same. FPS drop to 25 and CPU usage is at 75%, GPU at 55%.

So because that didn't do any good, I enabled hyperthreading again.

It's now clear to me that this game is lacking some huge performance optimisation. Clearly there are CPU and GPU ressources avaliable, but game seems to be too stupid to use them.
I just hope Guild Wars 2 developers might find some sense soon and update game to dx11 or dx12 + do some work on optimisation in general.
Another dumb thing at this game ... You can't turn off skill efects from other players, or at least reduce them by 70% or something .... nah let's just cause FPS drop with all those effect combined -.-

Make sure you use the 64bit client. You can find it in your account section in the game website.

Still your FPS will drop.
50+ models, dozens and dozens of projectiles (GW2 has a better physical engine than most other MMOs) and effects, dozens of AI scripts going on, it will crush any current PC specs.

You can reduce the number of models shown and the quality of them. You can also reduce the effects.

DX11/12 won't do much. It is mostly the physics engine that kills the FPS.

Does network bandwidth have any bearing on the lowering of frames per second in this game?
