Contradictory much?

That said probably wasn't wise.

Should I be entitled to come into your house and call you a wise and beautiful woman anytime I like?

(not that I think you are in anyway a wise and beautiful woman).

Erm.

It's unlawful to go off on a racist rant like that, but that's us "acting like racism doesn't exist over here". Logic issue detected.

Perhaps you should be better informed before casting judgement about the attitudes of people in another country. Just because some racist bigot's rant on a train doesn't get front-page news is perhaps not because "we're trying to sweep it under the carpet". How many idiots in your country do you suppose are engaging in similar behaviour today? Why don't they all have prime-time news time? Oh yeah, it must be because your country's media is engaged in a cover-up.

Nah, racist rants here rarely make the news because no one really cares. (except perhaps the group being offended)

We're accustomed to idiots going off on a rant and usually just ignore it.

Should I be entitled to come into your house and call you a wise and beautiful woman anytime I like?

(not that I think you are in anyway a wise and beautiful woman).

You can call anyone a wise and beautiful woman any time you like. You DON'T have the right to come into my house uninvited.

Of course, if you call the wrong person a wise and beautiful woman...you may be in for a serious ass-kicking...

She was disturbing the peace. They arrest people for that in America too guys. I'd let even a few racist remarks slide but she was taking it to an extreme.

And in answer to the OP yes I have heard such racism more than once. Go to the worse areas of the American deep south and you'll hear plenty of it. On the flip side you'll also get a lot of counter-racism from the concentrated minority populations in the cities. It's been around forever and it always will be in some form or other, I'm not too concerned.

I can turn the internet off, its something I choose to subject myself to. And I certainly monitor my kids internet use.

So, no. Its nothing like the internet.

Two points... The first is there's piss offs everywhere in life. Some weirdo ranting on public transportation, out on the street, or whatever is part of life. The fact that it's racist ranting doesn't make a bit of difference.

Point 2 is it's exactly like the internet. If you give weirdos a response, or acknowledge their existence, that gives them the attention their looking for. The correct response on that train was this :^| She'll most likely STFU, or worst case, she has to get off eventually. One more piss of in life come and gone. 83,574 more piss offs to come.

You don't have a right to use public transport either.

I'd rather the law dealt with it than that woman got a beating in front of her kid.

Yeah its not the fact she was racist or swore once or twice and then STFU. Its they way she carried on in a way that no one could really get away from.

Guess I don't live around the racists in South Carolina. That mouth would not be tolerated by people around me. She is lucky not to get her head caved in.

Of course I am educated and interact with other educated people of many races....

Arguing with people that live in a country with no explicit right to free speech is a waste of time, they will never understand the American point of view.

Wow. I pop out for an hour and when I come back it's a freedom of speech thread... Great. This woman was being racist I don't see the freedom of speech issue.

Also all the American morons who felt the urge to swing into the thread just to type "lol British teeth and America is awesome" STFU.

In any event. Anyone else sen this kind of racist IRL?

I agree, and it makes little sense to me that a load of people got arrested for beating her up when she is actually the cause of the problem.

To the person who quoted Voltaire:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltaire
"The most oft-cited Voltaire quotation is apocryphal. He is incorrectly credited with writing, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” These were not his words, but rather those of Evelyn Beatrice Hall, written under the pseudonym S. G. Tallentyre in her 1906 biographical book The Friends of Voltaire"

If you come into my house uninvited you will be charged with trespassing...
Given I'm in the US that's on the nice side of things that could happen.

You can be arrested for acting like that in the states too - though it'd be about HOW she's saying it rather than what she's saying. Disturbing the peace - at a minimum she'd be kicked off the train.

Fighting words are not protected speech.

Out on the street? Maybe. I don't really pay attention to ranters much, other than for temporal amusement. Privately, I've known racists of all types. From almost non-existent, to white supremacists. That's a fact of life, and doesn't mean a thing one way or the other.

If he subjected you to a racist rant like the woman did in the video on the "tram," he could be arrested for attempting to incite a riot in the good 'ol US of A.

My thoughts exactly. I'm not really sure on what the penalty is for disturbing the peace, but I wouldn't be surprised if it included at least a night in jail (especially if she was drunk, so she may sober up).

So I just watched the video. Its not so much what she says, but rather the fact that she is disturbing the peace. If she chose to say the same words at a normal volume without yelling at specific people, ie verbally assulting individuals within a close proximity, then she would be entitled to the defense of free speech (at least in the US). In this case she is directly insulting others in a verbal assault.
Honestly though compared to what I hear on the streets of NYC her rant is mild in comparison. If she was standing on a street corner, her rant would be less offensive due to the fact that no-one would be trapped in a confined space with her.
It is often a gray area even here in the US. Esp when the Neo-nazi's are on one corner and the Repairationists are on the other. (Time square can get interesting sometimes.)

That's why it's called "freedom" because sometimes people do things you don't agree with.

Freedom of speech wouldn't cover this in the UK, it would be inciting racial hatred I imagine

By talking to people. They're all over. Black supremacists too! The most hardcore guy was one I worked with. I suspected he was a KKK member, but I don't know that for fact. It's only the crazies that are obvious. Most people keep it to themselves, or to people with sympathies for the most part. People hate each other for all kinds of reasons, and race is as good as any. It's no worse than any other reason, regardless of what you're told ;^)
