By talking to people. They're all over. Black supremacists too! The most hardcore guy was one I worked with. I suspected he was a KKK member, but I don't know that for fact. It's only the crazies that are obvious. Most people keep it to themselves, or to people with sympathies for the most part. People hate each other for all kinds of reasons, and race is as good as any. It's no worse than any other reason, regardless of what you're told ;^)

I dont think any of us Yanks know what kind of protection of free speech laws exist in the UK.Freedom of speech wouldn't cover this in the UK, it would be inciting racial hatred I imagine

Since freedom of speech is one of the key amendments to the US Constitution, we often have lengthy court battles about what is protected. More likely than not the police will use other charges such as disturbing the peace, or terroristic threats to curtail such behavior as the constitutionality issue can bog down prosecution.Basically all speech is protected except for hate speech

As for hate speech, well like someone said above. We often make hateful speech about people but some groups are just not protected as well, ie homosexuals, the obese, etc.
Classifiing a statement as hatefull can be difficult when legal standard need to apply.

I never realized how offended Polish people could get over Polish jokes, until one morning about 20 years ago, I had stopped at the mini-mart on my way to work for gas. The guy I carpooled with and I were telling Polish jokes while I filled the tank.
Some guy pulls in at the pump next to me and listens for a minute, then says to me, "Hey, I'm Polish, and I find those kinds of jokes offensive. I really wish you'd stop." Then he left and went into the store...My buddy and I ignore the jerk and continue telling Polack jokes...
He comes back out of the store, hears that we're STILL telling Polack jokes, and says, "OK asshole, I TRIED to be nice about this, but I guess the only thing left is to take you behind the store and kick your ass." Hell, I'm running early for work, so he and I head out back.
As soon as we get behind the store, the fucker pulls a razor...

That makes sense, hate speech is fairly well defined and used over here, it's normally just used to protect minority groups, the UK is generally of the opinion that some speech isn't worth protecting.

I know one who frequents a local bar, once tried to talk to me about the forthcoming "******ocalypse" where all the black people are apparently going to rise up and try to overthrow the US government. He also told a story about a supposed encounter with a black gang, which included him "diving behind a car" and "providing suppressive fire" and other obvious James Bond wannabe bullshit.
