damn, can you say ESXi? PCIx add in cards are cheap-ish on Ebay if needed...

Hmm... I guess if you could run 64 bit guests it would be good. With the older Opterons, I don't know...

all opterons support 64 bit instructions. no reason you couldnt run a 64 bit guest.

if i wasnt broke i might be tempted to jump on this.

I think they are two single core opterons. Also, nothing on VMwares site that I can find that says this model works with ESX/ESXi.

with Hyper-V or ESX you need the equivalent of VT to run 64 bit guests, not just 64 bit CPU's.

Hmm, at that price I'm tempted to buy it for my dad to use for browsing the internet. It could make a nice Christmas present.

Sorry for the noob question but what windows operating systems would work with it? Assuming that I just want to use it as a standalone computer, not a true server, could I just put windows XP on it? I ask as someone who has free access to at least all home versions of windows.

Yes you could use any version of Windows XP.

But if this is going to be just a basic web-browser for your father, you may want to check out the dimensions of the chassis. As a server, it's meant to be rackmounted and therefor very wide. He would need to lay it flat obviously, and would need ample space. Another possible concern would be the probable noise from this. I haven't checked the specs in depth, but it probably has 40 or 60mm fans, which are extremely "whiny" if in close proximity.

Another option for $26 more may be this: http://www.geeks.com/details.a...01RS-AMDX961-R&cat=SYS - it would offer very similar performance, or for $100 more: http://www.geeks.com/details.a...0006A-C2D654-R&cat=SYS - it would be faster and more energy efficient.

Keep in mind 'boys and girls', these are 1U meaning the fans around around 25mm or so and they are going to sound like 4 hair dryers turned on high.

think it would be possible to mod it to cut down on some of that noise?

I ran some Supermicro servers in a test environment at my place for a month and my electric bill definitely went up by quite a bit. Course it had dual power supply. Also the noise sucks and boot up time on servers is ridiculously slow. It was placed in the next room and unless I had both doors closed it was definitely hard to sleep. I can't recommend this for home use at at.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up getting the C2D system for $274 shipped. It won't make it for Christmas day but I think my dad will be happy with it none the less.

the opteron 246 HE does not support AMD-V aka SVM. This would be decent enough if you wanted to run some virtual servers on linux or xen paravirtualization compatible systems. There are no SVM compatible opterons on socket 940. You could get this and upgrade later to some

For $120 this is not too bad with 4GB RAM and 2 CPUs

This would be pretty good for a virtualized ldap, dns, proxy, web server with each service in a dedicated VM.
