Radar detectors and their effectiveness...

I don't think it matters how many years ticket-free you've gone with a specific model. I have a cheap-ass Uniden that I thought would work (I didn't read up first) and I've been ticket-free for years... just go with the flow of traffic (always have someone in front of you), OR... go no faster than 7-9 miles above the posted limit.

You can get a 1.7 version unit on ebay for 300 or so but it's $189 to upgrade it to a 1.8 unit.
The 1.8 units go for more than new on ebay.

I have a Passport 8500... I just got it about 2 months ago when I got my bring red Camaro Z28 with a loud borla exhaust. Basically, the car is a cop magnet. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket yet and I'm not exactly a slow driver.

However, before the radar detector, I never had any warnings other than what I saw - and that wasn't enough 5 different times in 3 years.. That's a lot of tickets.

Anyway.. I usually get plenty of warning now.. but false alarms are annoying. However, I'd rather slow down 50 times unnecessarily than be pulled over once.

Funny thing is... that's probably why my friends who got radar detectors don't get tickets anymore... because of those false warnings... ...they slow down a lot more.
