The problem with a laser detector is that you've already been nailed by time you detect it....but if cops still use radar in your area then this is a good deal.

I agree, and usually if they also notice that you have a detector, you are about 200% more likely to get a ticket as opposed to being able to get a warning.

Only thing that helps against laser are jammers, but they are not legal in all locations.

actually, my el cheapo detector has saved my butt a bunch of times even on laser. Cops tend to be lazy, and leave it on across the road. It hits the guy in front of me, or 3 cars ahead, and my detector goes crazy. 1 downshift, and im going 65 again.

This is a bad detector, but for $30 it may indeed save you once or twice. It's certainly better than nothing.

The best ones cost $300-$400 (Escort 8500 - Valentine One).
But you can get very similar preformance out of Bel models (like the 910 which is only $85 new at several online vendors). This is what I'm looking to buy, it is just as sensitive as their top models (almost identical sensitivity compared to the Escort and Valentine one) but has fewer features (like "voice alerts" or ideitification of the exact frequency of the radar (still tells you which band, Ka, X, K, Laser, etc).

Most people who are really into radar stuff suggest nothing but the best, but I think for about $100 or even less you can get almost the same preformance from a Bel detector.

The Whistler 1783/1793 and PNI Sensoro 7500/7600 and Travler II are also good solutions for slighly less (like $70-100). The PNI model is cordless (slightly less sensitivity but no cord over your dash, still better than this detector by leaps and bounds).

I had a cheap PNI 5000 from Buy.com (price mistake of the day) and it saved me twice. But it missed a few traps.

Someone said that avoiding tickets is about 90% awareness and 10% detector, that sounds about right. Also, this detector does not have VG-2 invisibility (meaning some cops will be able to tell that you're using a detector, though it's kinda rare).

I'd say save up a bit and get something that will help a lot more, but don't blow your money away on a $300 or $400 detector unless you really need some electronic voice to tell you to slow the he!! down or really need to know the direction from which the radar is coming from.

Just my $0.02,

for 30 bucks its worth it.

I have a detector thats about 5 yrs old or so.. got it in 99 or 2000.. its saved my butt several times.

I dont have it mounted on teh windshiled, its stuck on the dash in its cubby hole . I do have a windshield mount i prefer to use teh cubby hole..

a bit reduced distance on its sensitivity but it works.. still no ticket..

Mine is a Cobra 9000 series from way back.. i think its 9600 but im not sure.

$30 detectors are not a good idea. They typically false so often that you tend to ignore it and then get caught when it's a "real" warning. Alternatively, they have terrible sensitivity, so you find out too late anyway. Sometimes "something" is NOT better than "nothing"... always keep up your visual scanning, as this is the best defense for tickets. The radar detector is merely an added warning, but you should never "depend" on it blindly.

In any case, I believe this is a Uniden model (LRD sounds familiar, as does the shape). Uniden was never marked very well for either falsing or sensitivity, and has also stopped making detectors, I think.

The best resource for comparing detectors that I have found is at http://www.speedzones.com/ - there you can see what works, and what doesn't.
