I bought one willing to give ati a chance but with some many different models of the same card and me getting burned on this deal I will go backto nvidia. Guess ya get what you pay for

And why is this ATI's fault? You bought a very inexpensive card from a vendor. That card is not even out yet officially. You won't find it mentioned on ATI's site. It looks like these cards leaked out into the OEM market. If it makes you feel better take a look at this review. Its bablefish translated, but as you will see, the LE card dusts the GF MX by a wide margin. Its still a good deal for ~$100.

Yeah, I wanna echo Oldfart on this (might be because I'm an old fart myself, too... hehe): While NewEgg might need to be fried (deepfat fried in lard, at that), ATI is not to blame for NewEgg's LE (low-end) behavior here.

Maybe those of you who ordered should call your credit card companies and stop the transaction. If NewEgg complains, just tell them that you've become LE toward them (Livid, Enraged), and that you'll be even more LE (Litigious, Effective-immediately) if they don't back off.

sent an e-mail to Customer Service at Newegg.com. Brought up misleading, false advertisement, and hinting sorta towards court action. hehe. But i guess you do get what you pay for. Although on the otherhand what i thought i was paying for was an original ati radeon ddr. :|

After trying Oldfart's (thanks ) regedits on the previous page, my new 32 bit 3DMark 2000 scores is (1024 x 768 x 32bit depth):

4418 compared to the

4702 that I got with the GeForce 2 GTS DDR 32 meg (Creative card).

Also, my wintune 98 scores are now:

RADEON DDR
1152x864@32bits/pixel
120 Video MPixels/s
173 OpenGL MPixels/s
242 Direct3D MPixels/s
335 Direct3D Null driver score
178 Direct3D Primary driver score

You can see my old scores several pages back in this thread.

I'll post more about disabling Hyper-Z in a few moments.

Not really looking that bad (in 32 bit anyway) at this point

Disabled HyperZ (per Oldfart):

3D Mark2000 score: 3679 (apparantly, HyperZ affects this card regardless of what others say)

Wintune 98 scores (HyperZ disabled):

Summary
RADEON DDR
1152x864@32bits/pixel
121 Video MPixels/s
175 OpenGL MPixels/s
133 Direct3D MPixels/s
328 Direct3D Null driver score
177 Direct3D Primary driver score

Big differnece with the HyperZ disabled (worse )...

1024 x 768 x 16bit depth tests (The Radeon doesn't excell at 16 bit as expected):

3Dmark 2000 scores:

Radeon LE (overclocked memory 180): 5036

GeForce 2 GTS 32 Meg DDR (stock: 183 I think): 7002

Engineer, if disabling hyper-z makes such a huge difference on this card, I guess it means that the LE DOES have hyper-z?

collymor,

I would imagine it has some sort of HyperZ....It's been reported that it contains a stripped down version, but I can't verify that at this time

But the numbers speak for themselves on the registry edits....

Oh, and one other thing...I've read (and heard) that the HyperZ functionality should provide around 20% increase in certain tests....the above numbers are really close to that 20% increase.

20.09% actually

More benchmarks:

Quake III Arena Demo 1 (Timedemo 1):

All test run with 32 bit textures in 32 bit mode:

800 x 600 x 32bit: 98.2

1024 x 768 x 32bit: 74.9

1280 x 1024 x 32bit: 48.4

(all frames per second)

HyperZ Enabled or Disabled had no effect on the scores...they were the same in both cases?????!!!!???

Update: Bumped the speed up to 190 MHz ( I have a Nidec Blower blowing across the card for cooling) and the new 3DMark 2000 is 4585 at 1024 x 768 x 32bit...

Exactly, ATI is at no fault here. You buy a cheapy and you want to blame ATI? How about the vendor? ATI will be better off without customers like you man lol.

Engineer thanks for the Q3 benchmarks. What Ver Q3? Demo ver? That score is not bad at all. Those reg setting are for D3D. I'll see if I can find out how to do it for OpenGL. By your benchmarks so far, these cards look pretty good.

To compare, my 3DMark 2000 score for 1024 x 768 x 32 is 4673 with a retail Radeon @ 183 Mhz on a PIII 933. Is there a such thing as 3Dmark 2001? Didn't see it on their web site.

all this talk about newegg and ati, but did anyone actually get the card from them? Poll? Is it legit?

Why yes I got it and I am going to sell the lil' crapper on E bay ASAP!

Then I will swing over to a competant e-retailer like buy.com and purchase the 64MB version of the Radeon.

What still confuses me, is why some of the sellers on www.pricewatch.com ADVERTISE it as having NO Hyper-Z technology. Do you think that ati just made it disabled in the registry, but all you would have to do is do a quick regedit to enable it?

Very good question. I was wondering this myself. I'll have one in a couple of days and try it out.

Engineer, could you delete these 3 keys from your registry and see if the card performs like Hyper-Z is enabled or disabled?

"DisableHierarchicalZ"="0"
"DisableHyperZ"="0"
"FastZClearEnabled"="1"

Maybe play around a bit. Turn Hyper-Z off, then delete the keys, turn it on, then delete them. You get the idea. We want to see if it is enabled or disabled by default.

oldfart,

the original tests I ran didn't include those keys in the registry at all....so my guess is that HyperZ is off by default! I had to manually add them in one at a time.

If I get time, I'll remove them and re-run the tests....I stayed up to 6:00 am playing with this thing ..hehe!

I would like to retract the ATI comment because you all are right that ATI has nothing to do with newegg's false advertising. I have been playing with my radeon LE that I recieved from newegg on friday and for the money it has been doing pretty good in quake3 and counter-strike. I am gonna try the registry edits and so how much better it does and then decide whether or not to RMA it on Monday and get a retail 64mb radeon.
