Radeon 4800 series, drivers and heat

So after getting home from work today, and after finishing my homework, I installed my new 4870. Some things take priority over new computer hardware, but not many.

My case cooling is generally very good, particularly around the video card area. My 2900XT idled at in the mid 50s Celsius most of the time. My 4870 is idling at 77-78 C, according to CCC. However, I don't here the fan spinning at all, and the current clocks are 500/900 at idle.

I've the 8.6 Catalyst drivers installed, however, I do see 8.7 Betas available from Guru3D and a few other places. Can any other 4800 series owners vouch for a set of drivers that ramps up fan speeds to combat heat?

ATI Tool and ATI Tray Tools haven't been updated in many many months.

These cards do run hot, if you read Anandtech's review, the fan will spin up really fast then quiet back down again as soon as it is "cool." Get used to high temps or force the fanspeed with something. I'm not sure if Rivatuner handles the 4800 series.

Until AMD fixes this, here is the safest way to control your fan profile link. I'm still waiting on my card it shipped today from BB. It involves creating a profile in CCC.

My HD4870 is at 80C idle, I have a very quiet system so I can hear a slight whirr-up for maybe 10-15 seconds at the most and it stops.... a pause for a few seconds and another spin-up.

Im going to do this fan profile stuff.. see what I can get

EDIT: 26% is perfect noise for me... dunno about the temps so Im leaving it higher

Does the Accelero S1 fit the HD4870?

It looks great, extremely cheap too... I have a bit of room above my card, a slots worth of room below the stock cooler and a touch on the long side but none along the short edge as it is almost touching my HDD's as it is. Would it fit in my case?

It would help keep noise tamable and I can slap a silent 120mm fan on it to keep the edge off.

Well, that did the trick. Setting the fan speed for 65 dropped the temp to 48C. 65 is a bit too noisy though, gonna have to play with the speed controls a bit.

Yes it fits... I put a S1 rev 2 on my 4870 and my idle temps went from 80 to 49. I also zip tied a 120mm Loon fan on my Accelero. Load temps never leave the 60's. The only downside is that the PVM heatsink that comes with it doesn't fit. You're going to need to cut it, or use other ramsinks for those. Right now I have nothing on mine and it's working okay but once my thermal tape arrives I plan on fixing that.

It's a nice solution for the money and it's drop dead silent.

After some playing around with the fan profiles, I'm going to keep it at 50% for a while. With that, it idles just under 50C, right under where my 2900XT sat.

I've only put the 4870 through a few titles so far, but its definitely a beast. Its handled everything I've thrown at it. Scenarios that would bog my 2900XT down, the 4870 blows through laughing all the way.

That must be a little unsettling hearing giggles coming from within the pc case...

My fan speed wont go above 26%.... toooooo loud!!!!

For the moment, Im going to slip a 120mm fan into my case, angled to blow directly onto the card. That should alleviate the problem.

Im tempted by the Accelero, I love quiet but I am "oh its new, I dont want to spoil my new toy" at the minute so lets wait and see.

Age of Conan is not kind to this card but its definately faring better than my 8800GT.

Man I started to full around with the fan settings today and....I'm afraid to even try above 60% as 60% makes my 4870 sound like a new super Radeon Lawnmower.

Could you please give us some load temperature numbers when the fan is at 50%? You know, while you're playing a game

Read the link temps are good at 36% fan profile with a decent cooling case (not loud)

System noise acceptability or loudness is very subjective. A system may be acceptable to some that to others may sound like a jet landing on an aircraft carrier. I think mine are fairly quiet but, surely to some that strive for true silence, will seem loud and annoying.
