Radeon 7000 comments please

I bought a compaq 6000z. It has shared video I believe. It is due to be shipped here any day. I found a Radeon 7000 AGP for 35 dollars.

Should I keep it?
I surf the net mainly. I open many explorer documents at once. I do not at this time play any games.
I thought any video card would be better than the shared video.

Comments?
Should I spend a few more dollars for a better card?
I know this machine is low end
Is there a nice video card under 50 bucks?

that is not to shabby of a video card to go with. It would more then meet your needs plus proaly give you better video performance in windows.

which one..32SDram or 32DDR..DDR is very nice for that price..the S3 onboard is ok if you are not gaming(plays video pretty well too..) ..I'd address the ram(system has only 2 slots hope its not filled with 2 sticks of 128 each..) situation as well..otherwise am in agreement w/ Adul <edit>

more ram..go over to HotDeals forum grab a stick of Crucial 512 DDR266(pc2100) or a 512 pc2700 ..best bang for the $$..oh...and the First real task after physical setup ..is to check the CDRW ..burn a straight copy of just about any known good CD..grab 5 Fuji(Taiyo Yuden) blanks and run the Compaq CD Creator wizard to make your 5 Restore CDs .

I have upgraded the ram buying a 512 chip, it came with 128

The AGP Radeon is the 32 DDR

AMD 2200+ compaq

Radeon 7000 is a Radeon VE. ATI renamed the VE as part of its new naming system. It is the "Value" or MX of the original radeon. Stay away from it. Just use the integrated video untill you afford a geforce3. Here is some benchies of it. Geforce2 MX and even the Voodoo4 crush the radeon 7000 in quake 3.

If you are not planning on using this video card for gaming, then don't buy it. Shared Video is only a problem when you have too little ram, less than 64MB, or you trying to play a 3D computer game. If you only plan to do Internet surfing, e-mail and office applications then you should be fine.

Since you say you don't do gaming, it's definitely good enough. As other pointed out, the Radeon 7000 is a renamed Radeon VE except it doesn't have dual VGA outputs like some versions of the original VE did.

A nicer card is the Radeon 7500, doesn't cost much more, and has arguably better 2D and 3D capabilities (ie, for lighter gaming like The Sims and Warcraft 3 et al) . A competent 3D card is the Radeon 9000 (if you want quiet - it has no fan) and the 8500LE (if you want better performance)

If you feel like going the nvidia route, get the cheapest thing you can find made after 2001 that doesn't say "MX" anywhere.

The R7000/Radeon VE was less than a crippled Radeon DDR. Not only does it have only a 64-bit memory bus, and no T&L but it's RAMDAC's are slower than the Radeon DDR as well. Honestly, I would look for a full Radeon SDR (Radeon 7200) rather than a R7000

Yes the Radeon 7200 agp 32mb sdram are good also, i have on in my slower pc which was in this pc before.

Unless you need the card for DVI or s-video out I would just stick with the onboard video. I just picked up a 7000 PCI 32mb DDR for my home theater pc. The card works fine for regular windows stuff and videos. I wouldn't try gaming with it considering it benched at about 1/14th of what my 9700 NP benches at. Of course the systems were completely different but it still gives you some idea as to how it compares.

If you aren't playing any new 3d games it'll be just fine. It's even ok for old 3d games and 2d games (I used one previously, still have it as a spare part).

It's a great little card if you don't play any 3D games. It offers cheap dual-display and excellent DVD playback.

Actually the 7200 is tons better than the 7000. I'd go for the SDRAM if you want a first-gen Radeon card. I'd compare a 7000 to a Voodoo3 3000 or GF2/MX200 in gaming performance. The GF2/GTS will kick the crap out of them all, and they start in the $30 range, too!

The $30-50 range of videocards are a pretty vast range of performance levels, so be careful.

that card should be more then suffice for ur current needs. being i am a spoiled hot deals and fs/ft junkie... i would try to work the price lower

My room mate has a Radeon 7000 which is okay for him. he plays WC3 and thats about it. I see u don't really play games. so the on board may be okay. But if you ever want to start playing a game or watching a a DVD or something u will probably notice a difference in quality. So if u have 35 laying around gor for it. Or like the others said go for something even better !!! lol....
