A lot. The CUs are VLIW2, meaning to get anything out of the theoretical 2x increase in FP32 performance, you need some driver magic. Without it, it's just the small ~20% increase in CUs (80 ->96) and whatever the extra clockspeed gives you (which isn't much, compared to 6950XT).
I think there are a lot of us who want to join team red. Not at these extortion prices though. I will wait it out. The sum of all fears for AMD should be if Nvidia starts selling 30 series cards made on TSMC silicon. Then it's all over for AMD. That may sound crazy to some of you. Nvidia bought a boat load of TSMC silicon slots that they have to use. The 30 series cards were made using Samsung silicon.

Obviously my timeline for the circus starts in 4 to 6 months.

Exactly, these prices are crazy. Somewhere there is simply not enough competition to drive the prices down.

Specifically, they bought a boatload of 4N wafers. Are you suggesting that they re-do RTX 3xxx designs on this node?

Considering the 40 series does not have Ti models yet. It may make sense to have a 3080 on TSMC silicon with 16GB of ram or close to it. I am not talking about all the 30 series cards. Supposedly Nvidia has containers full of 40 series cards that had been waiting for release for 4 or 5 months before the official launch date.

I am just pointing out that Nvidia has a ton of TSMC silicon that they already paid for and TSMC would not offer refunds for unused silicon.

I do not understand why AMD is not making as many graphics cards as possible. Nvidia is 80% of the market if not more. AMD is only 12% market share. RDNA3 looks pretty good so far.

Funny thing is the Review saying that 7900XTX has the same performance in RT as RTX3080, but according of the review own numbers the 7900XTX is 39% faster at 4K in RT games.
It's more like a 3080 for fully path traced games, which Nvidia is making a thing with it's remix stuff to fully path trace older games.

Porting between fabs is pretty much doing a new design. The circuit blocks functionality would be the same, but how that translated into actual silicon would be different and would have to be validated as a new design. In all, not even close to as simple or as cheap as one might think. In any case, they have 4N designs already, why reinvent?

It could be that the current botched batch of RDNA3 chips is just a limited run. They needed something badly to cash in on the Christmas shopping frenzy.

Maybe AMD already has the RDNA3 respin up and running in their labs and we may get an RDNA3 refresh by June of next year. AMD could even release a 32GB version of RDNA3 at $1500 to sway people away from "only" 24GB VRAM from Nvidia's flagship. Even now for $200 less, AMD is giving 8GB extra VRAM which will definitely factor into the buying decisions of a lot of people.

It's kind of sad that AMD is ahead of the 4080 this time around with the 4080. Last round the 6800xt was behind the 3080. AMD had a really go thing going with RDNA1 in the past. Remember when they sold a boat load of the RX580 cards. I want a team red card, but I will probably end up with green team again.

It's hard to type when you are falling out of Nakatomi Plaza. Many of us consider it a holiday tradition, and it isn't really Xmas until he does.

On topic: I own 4 RDNA2 cards, so I am picking up the slack for these fence sitters. I tried to buy RDNA3 yesterday but it was like the pandemic all over again.

I was like wow, four!

Then I counted up how many I own in functional computers. Also four Do the Series X and PS5 count? If so, I think I have a problem

Two nvidia powered computers in the house now, just swapped out a 980Ti for a 6700XT so went from tied to red team with that swap.

Parts bin is *all* nvidia right now though! The reality is that they are just more liquid and PCs with nvidia GPUs are easier for me to sell. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I definitely have a problem. If I could have added RDNA3 to my cart yesterday, even as a combo with a Zen4 I wasn't going to use, I'd have done it. I was like, the hell with it, the Mrs. will probably stage an intervention but Imma do it anyways.

I agree about Nvidia cards; RGB sells PCs, and Nvidia GPUs seal the deal.

I will try to figure out how I am going to get away with buying another card I don't need. The WEF is real sometimes. I may use you as my argument actually. I will tell her she should feel lucky. I could be spending real money on a Vette like my buddy @blckgrffn did.

So what some of us speculated was on point. AMD played it conservative, and let the board partners be the ones to go full ham. The Asus and XFX easily clearing the 3GHz hurdle and turning 20-23% more performance than a reference 4080 for the same or less money.

More like 8-12% more performance.

Clocks might increase by near 20%, but scaling is half of this.

AMD did the correct thing in the long run.

Clocking these things at 3 ghz would had lead to crashing and RMA's as clocks have to be stable for all titles and for several years. That is why partner cards are not maxed out and have about 5% more clocks left in them.

This is nothing like the past 7970 or maxwell launch where cards were underclocked relative to their limits and a significant amount of performance was left on the table.

Tuning individuals cards like wizard had done while not doing significant stability testing is impractical for 100,000's of cards

Save your silly the overclocking increase doesn't count nonsense for someone that might buy it.

From the TPU review
While the AMD reference RX 7900 XTX was 8% faster than the RTX 4080, the stock ASUS TUF is 11.5% faster, if you add OC+UV on top, you're getting 23.1%—this looks much closer now to what AMD has promised us.
The man has street cred, you don't. I'll leave it at that.

Just great... it really is going to take RDNA 3+ for us to see what AMD originally intended the architecture to be, eh?

Oh well, people were expecting perfect execution by AMD because of the success of the CPU group. No one's perfect, as it turns out.
I'm out of the market right now - but if I get back into gaming next year; a 7800XT on a fixed N32 GPU with an additional year of driver development under its belt could be the ticket to ride.
