Got you. 9000 is a cheaper version, 9700 is the one to wait. Well, I think I am going to pass both of them.

I really don't mean to thread crap, but I just don't want anyone to think this is the new top of the line card and shell out their cash for it. This is the card that's meant to be the competitor to the Geforce 4 MX (i.e. budget) series. For $149 you could pick up a Geforce4 Ti4200 which pretty much tramples all over the Radeon 9000.

Again sorry for the thread crap if this is perceived as such, I just want people to get the most for their money.

Or get the AIW Radeon 8500 from CircuitCity for $149 after MIRs (see Techbargains.com). The 8500 is better than the 9000... not to mention this is a AIW model

If the thread stinks, then feel free to crap.

This is exactly why I was saying I'm disappointed in ATI for this rotten naming scheme. 9700 is real fast, but 9000 is slower than 8500. Dumb****s, good way to alienate customers.

Look at the warranty very closely as some are very short and for a few dollars more you can get the retail version with a year or even in the case of visiontek lifetime warranty. OEM on Video cards sucks in general due to the short warranty. For about 15% more you can usually get the retail version.
Just my two and a half cents.

oh come ON...

nVidia did the exact same thing with the GF4MX naming convention... people see the GF4 part and think "YIPPEE!!! a GeForce4"

everyone is playing dirty with their naming conventions.... oh well

I agree. I wonder if the average user can really tell a difference between performance of a 8500 and 9000. Plus, I'm sure it sounds a lot better in package deals.

All these companies play games. The GF4MX is a castrated piece of crap and fools rush in thinking they are getting a GF4.

The Radeon 9500 looks like the better deal if it comes out at the predicted $250 mark. It's probably going to be a slower clocked 9700.

I have been a geforce owner and user since the birth of the gpu. The last pc i got a deal on a radeon 64mb 8500 retail...they can give me the next Geforce card only when they pry the 8500 from my cold dead hands. The vibrant colors, the smooth movement....radeon rocks.
