Radeon 9500PRO or nVidia 4600Ti

I am building a new system, gotta order the parts in the next few days.
Which is the better gaming video card?
The Radeon 9500PRO or nVidia 4600Ti?
Price seems to be fairly close.

I'd get the Radeon. It's a newer generation of GPU and performance wise it should outdo the 4600 hands down.

9500pro is directx 9 compliant to boot

9500Pro IMHO.

Fully DX9 compliant, vastly superior vertex/pixel shading performance. Fairly similar 3D performance, except with FSAA or Anisotropic filtering in which is manhandles the Ti4600.
Consistently decent 2D quality, much better DVD playback implementation, and a far better TV-Out implementation on the driver level. Slightly worse multi-monitor implementation on the driver level.



Poll is 9:1 in favor of the 9500Pro... I'm actually mildly surprised more havent voted for the Ti4600.

Ok how about this....should i sell my msi geforce ti4600 and buy the radeon 9500pro? I paid 230 for it 2 months ago and I think I can get at least $200 for it. Is it worth the hassle? I'm thinking in time with driver updates, the radeon has the potential to surpass the ti4600 even more.

Faced that question last tuesday. I chose the 9500 pro. Sheesh bought mine from mwave for 205 on tuesdays and they were outta stock now they have it in stock for 188!

I wouldn't, when it gets around to be clearly and considerably superior consider it then. By that time prices will have fallen and new cards within your budget could be much superior to the 9500Pro.

Well Anand reviewed it with newer drivers it's about the same(sometime a little lesser/more) then a 4600 except for AA in which is does much better. So probably better to get a directx9 9500 pro with potential to improve even more then a 4600 who's resale value will start going down faster.

The smaller number beside each card represents the minimum framerate achieved for that card in that test. Which means that when the 9700 pro drops to 10 fps in a certain situation, the 4600 will only drop to 30 fps in the same situation.

think about this though...11fps for half a second and an AVERAGE fps of 90 or 32fps for 10 seconds and an average of just under 60. I'll take the slight lag without being noticable rather than a drop of half for a long time.

I have both of those cards and I laid them out on my table and I must say neither of them is very fast at all. In fact my cat jumped up and sat on my 4600 so I think I'll have to choose the 9500 Pro.

The only advantage that the Ti4600 has over the 9500 Pro is the support of NVIDIA's drivers. However, as of late, ATi has been making some really kickass drivers that offer performance boosts on a regular basis.

Astonishing, however, is the slump in the minimum frame rate - this shows the extent to which a card can slow down when being run through its paces. While all ATI boards deliver respectable results in 1024 x 768, they slow down massively when in the higher resolutions.

Sure, the ATI card can haul, probably while your standing still looking at a wall,
but it looks like when the bullets start to fire and the resolutions are cranked even higher....

that the ATI cards fall.

I wonder if its thier usual crappy drivers, or is it the hardware? It may have something to do with memory speed/bandwidth, as the slower Ti cards suffer a similar fate.

The Radeon 9500 PRO drops to less than 1/4 the minimum framerate @ 1280x1024 and above resolutions, when compared to the Ti 4600. And I know alot of people choose to run higher resolutions, in favor of turning on AA which the new Radeons obviously kick butt in.

This worries me, as its in those heated battle situations, is when you need your video card to hold its own.

That kind of swing in framerates shows that there maybe some issues uncovered with ATI's cards hardware and/or drivers.

hard choice, If you plan on using lots of AA get the 9500 pro. Either one will be fine, 4600 is faster in some tests and i think is also cheaper for the time being.
