I just went from a 9000 AIW(Simliar, if not a little slower than the 8500) pro to 9600 XT AIW and the jump was pretty significant. I know its an XT compared to non-XT but DirectX 9 graphics(espcially water/reflections/shadows) is way better than any DirectX8 card in directx9 mode

SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 256MB AGP 4X/8X - Retail - $85.00 free ship

This one is now down to $82. -- Must resist.
I have this card w/ a A64 3000+ and 1gig pc3200 ram. It rus hl2, doom3, farcry all better than I expected (30+ fps generally on high 2xaa 2xaf). I have it overclocked slightly, but not a whole lot. I can't overclock it much more because the stock cooling doens't have a fan! It's only a heatsink. So that's the only major drawback is how limited overclocking is because of the inferior cooling. Still a good buy if you're looking for a cheap dx9 card that still runs new games.

These 9550/9600's look like some good deals... would it be a worthy upgrade from the Geforce FX 5200? (mad dog multimedia, 128mb version)

I do minimal gaming, so I don't need the cutting-edge stuff.... but if I can bump up the overall performance a bit, I'll eBay the 5200...

To me, the "inferior cooling" is a feature. I don't overclock, the games I play are fairly few and not state of the art by any means, and the heatsink is quiet! No fan noise is a major selling point for me.

I have (had) a ti4200 128MB that seems to have died. It was the one a while back that was on sale at CompUSA as a 64MB 4x card but 128MB 8x cards where in the box. Remember those? Well anyway, anything that tried to do DirectX pauses for 30 seconds or so works for 2, then pauses, etc. PNY won't honor the lifetime warranty because I can't find the receipt. I'm running on a borrowed 9000AIW right now. So this looks like it might be a good little card for me to consider. It has the memory, is DX9, and it's noiseless... I had installed the Zalman heatpipe to get rid of the fan on the 4200.

Anyone in the Newport News, VA area want to try out a ti4200 card to see if they have the same problem with it? I'll want it back regardless, I'll be going back to Louisiana soon to move some stuff, my receipt MIGHT still be there...

Very true for some. Me, I'm more about power than how quiet the computer is. My games are loud enough to drown out any fan noise I encounter.

OOPS. It's 64-bit.

Wouldn't do it. No DVI. Only 64 bit. Gigabyte makes a 9550 with both DVI and 128 bit - it was on sale at Amazon for a while.

Edit: you caught that before I posted I see.

This is a good value gamer who wants to be able to play HL2 but is cheap. It is worth noting that this card is DirectX 9 compatable which is the standard for new games (if you didn't know that, your card probably isn't )

Linkidoodle

Linkidoodle ?!?!!?!? dude you need a vacation...for your own good
