This is the 128bit version, has DVI, TV-out, 8x AGP, and 128 megs of ram.

This is a good value gamer who wants to be able to play HL2 but is cheap. It is worth noting that this card is DirectX 9 compatable which is the standard for new games (if you didn't know that, your card probably isn't )

Ah, good to see a video card price drop. For $50 I'd probably pass on the 6600 GT (at $185-190) and get that.

The Sapphire card only supports Direct X 8.0
The MSI card supports Direct X 9.0.
Newer games (like Splinter Cell CHaos Theory) will look better on the MSI card.
Does that matter if you don't game? Well, no. But if you do game, then it does.

Would this card work for Microsoft Media Center? I don't really care about gaming, but I want to build a cheap Media Center PC. I already have a 400SC as the starting point.

The nVidia Ti4x00 were really GREAT performers for the money. It's still hard to this day to find anything in their price range that competes!

no

What cheap card that would be better than ti4600 then? esp one that isn't noisy

Passive cooled AGP Nvidia 6600.

I must be cheap skate, most of them are around $130 and up. They all have huge mofo fans. Looking at the ones at newegg.com.

IIRC, the 9550 is inferior to the 9500 Pro, so if you can score a 9500, even better!.

Oh yeah--OP is good deal!

I've done exactly this using a 400SC Server from Dell.

I've got a 9600XT with an ATI HDTV Card as well as a PVR 250 MCE Card. With 1 GB of DDR 3200 RAM & Two 160GB Hard Drives.

In order for the HDTV Card to work properly under windows MCE2005 you need to have a card that supports Directx 9 (which the card in this deal supports). Also the HDTV Card needs the PVR 250 or a card with hardware encoding for to be recognized under 2005MCE.

You certainly don't have to have the ATI HDTV Card in order to make a HTPC I've just been upgrading as the deals come along.

I've done a lot of reading on HTPC's but am still learning a lot about it. A work in progress for sure.

I thought Splinter Cell wouldn't even run if you didn't have a directx9 card. As for the card, good deal since its 128 bit and not like the maddog one that was actually 64bit but advertised for the same price AR in compusa a month back.

Radeon 9550 = Radeon 9600 with lower clocks

R9550 = 250/400
R9600 = 325/400

Here are other deals I compiled from another thread:

R9550

Gigabyte Radeon 9550 256MB AGP 4X/8X Retail - GV-R955256D - $77.00 free ship

MSI Radeon 9550 256MB AGP 4X/8X Retail - RX9550-TD256 - $84.00 free ship

ABIT Radeon 9550 128MB AGP 4X/8X Retail - R9550-128CDT - $66.00 free ship

R9600

SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 256MB AGP 4X/8X - Retail - $85.00 free ship

SAPPHIRE Radeon 9600 128MB AGP 4X/8X - Retail - $78.00 free ship

All cards above are 128-bit memory with CRT, TV, and DVI out.
Is this MSI card much better than Sapphire Radeon 9250 128bit...I rarely game!!!
If you can afford the extra $20 ~ $25, then R9550 is the way to go. It is superior to R9250 in every category, but not by any great degree. If you can't afford it, the Sapphire R9250 with 128-bit memory is the best card available under $50.

question: my Radeon 8500 64MB just died.

i really don't game all that much, but i do sometimes, so i'd like to get the best bang for the buck.

which would you guys recommend:

Radeon 9550 $60
Radeon 9600 $78

how's the jump from 8500 -> 9550? 9550 -> 9600?

iamme, the 9550 is faster than your 8500, and if you don't game much, i'd stick with that. If you need a little more horsepower, you can always use ATItool to overclock the 9550 a bit.

I went ahead and got one from ZipZoomFly today for $63.99, prior to receiving the email.
Oh well.

Thought I would mention that it comes with a bonus of Ground Control II: Operation Exodus at ZipZoomFly if that is worth anything to you. It wasn't mentioned anywhere on the product page, but it was added to my order at checkout.

Edit: Nevermind, now it's out of stock at ZipZoomFly. Wonder if my order will ship? If not, it will probably be out of stock at ChiefValue by the time I find out. Great.
