ATI Radeon 9600 256MB AGPx8 Video. $103 + $7.24 shipping to CA

This is exactly what I am looking for, but seems a little cheap. Has anybody dealt with these folks? It's an AGPTEK card, which has a funky-bad english website.

The vendor is www.imagestore.us. They are listed on pricewatch, and brag about their ebay feedback. Has anybody dealt with them? They are based in Brooklyn. How stupid would it be to try them?

I am trying to get a dual head setup that will also be a good gaming setup. Has anybody used this card for that (Any 9600 Pro, not necessarily this one)? Does the DVI to VGA converter work correctly? Any limitations with it?

be advised...your title states that this is a 9600 pro.....its a non pro. Ergo, not the best of deals

Yeah, I already caught that and changed it. The AGPTEK site only showed a 9600 Pro, but the pictures don't look the same, so it is probably not the same card.

Stupid question: What is a 9600, relative to a 9600SE and a 9600 Pro? How do you tell the difference in the specs (in case the title is misleading)?

9600 SE: 325MHz core/365MHz memory, 64-bit memory bus
9600: 325MHz core/400MHz memory, 128-bit memory bus
9600 Pro: 400MHz core/600MHz memory, 128-bit memory bus
9600 XT: 500MHz core/600MHz memory, 128-bit memory bus

The 9600 SE really sucks. It's about half as fast as the regular 9600. The plain 9600 really isn't that great either. On the level of a Radeon 8500/GF4 Ti4200/Ti4400 most of the time.

If you're a gamer, the 9600 Pro and 9600 XT cards are the only ones worth buying.

I picked up a 9700 pro refurb off newegg for $130. Newegg refurbs were by far the best deal around when I was shopping for video cards. That is, if you get one that works.

raysum,

My machine is actually primarily for video editing, which is why I want multiple heads. The gaming performance is just for fun on the side. You really don't need much in the way of video performance for video editing. I am assuming that you are 100% digital (IEEE 1394) and don't need a capture card or an analog output (usually your camera or DV tape deck will do that).

Your video card is mostly just displaying video clips, which any decent $40 card will do just fine. TV out is a nice feature for editing, BTW, as is dual heads.

On the other hand, a fast (and huge) dedicated video harddrive (separate from your OS and apps), a lot of fast memory and a fast processor will be critical, otherwise rendering takes forever. You can get a video accelerator card like the Matrox RT.X100 to speed up and enhance your rendering (for $1000 or so), but that doesn't eliminate your need for a basic video card.

Dantzig,

Thanks for the breakdown. That helps me a lot.

Its at the bottom of the pack of radeon bench marks...of all models 9600 and up...
