ATI has stated that the 9600 XT is supposed to outperfomr the 9700 PRO. I would wait and see how it does. If so, buy it.

I now believe that ATI meant that the 9600XT outperforms the 9500 PRO, not the 9700 PRO. The 100mhz core increase can't compensate for the 8 pipeline architecture and 256bit memory bus of the 9700 PRO.

Might have been a typo in the statement....

of course we'll have to wait and see... I figure I'll wait for that or a bit longer before replacing my current card.

The 9700 Pro should theoretically be faster. It's also available right now. You could also go for a 9700 Non-Pro. The performance difference between it and the pro version is barely significant. However, the price difference is more noticeable.

What's the difference? That and price wise?

i still say wait for xmas, or a hl2 release
if youre buying a card mostly for that, and doom3 even.,...why not wait as long as possible to let prices go down as much as they can before the game is out?

Anand has this article up now, go and check it out for yourselves, there is no possible way that a 9600TX can beat a 9700NP/PRO.

AnandTech Article

However, it's still a very nice card and does very well.

I have a ATI retail 9500 Pro that I just "unlocked" a while ago and have it running at 325/600 and it ROCKS. If you can find one of those around still, try and get one of those, new of course. I have to brag a little about it, it has to be one of the BEST hardware purchase decisions I've made. That thing is like what 18 mohths old? And it STILL rocks balls. I won't be giving it up anytime soon...

I agree.. the statement that it will outperform the 9700 pro is pretty hard to believe, especially at the pricepoint they are offering it at, not to mention it comes with the full version of HL2.. Has to have been a typo, or just plain marketing BS.

However, if when the benchmarks hit the net, and it -is- true.. then i'll be first in line with bells on to buy one!

The 9600XT (and Pro) have the same number of Vertex Shaders (4) and Pixel Shaders (1) as the 9700/9800... Maybe this accounts for the added performance since shaders are becoming more important and the 9600Pro/XT has around a 1.5x core clock speed advantage.

*Number of shaders provided by Aida32. Don't shoot the messenger.

The 9500 Pro was (and still is) one of the best video cards for the price ever. A definite must-buy for someone in the market for a "budget" video card and they can find one.

Let me ask you guys this. What about DirectX9 support? All the new games will be based on this? The old 9700 won't support this right, but could it be flashed or is it part of the hardware?

No, the 9700 does support DX9.

If I hadn't already bought a 9700pro about a month back, I'd be hard pressed to passup the 9600XT. I mean, $200 for the card and HL2, I paid more than that for my 9700pro. And Im sure it will perform well because they wouldnt ship the card with a game it could barely run...talk about bad marketing.

The 9600XT will be $200 MSRP ($199, excuse me), but what will the price be at places like Newegg?

Well, if the 9600XT follows the same trend as the 9600 PRO, it will settle down to around $175 on places like Newegg. But the Holiday season could change that. The HL2 bundle could change that. If nVidia's offerings truly offer sub-par DX9 performance with DET 50+ drivers, things could change.

Not much info, but it's something:

9600XT @ Sapphire

Two-channel DDR memory? Er....?

Oh, and their blurb writer needs to be fired

The terrestrial plane has never been touched by technology the likes which has arrived today. Effects afforded by the world's most complex VPU's in the ATi RADEON? 9600 XT core, previously heralded as belonging to the celestial realm alone, now make their way to the hands of earthlings.

By the way, the 9700 is the better bet.

i would go with a 9700 Pro it beats the non Pro 9800 21 - 6 tests on anand's latest benchmarks so if the 9600 XT beats the 9700 Pro in a majority of tests than that makes it as fast a radeon 9800 pro pretty much which I doubt ATI would do because then it would be competing with one of their high end cards

if you can find a 9800 non pro with 2.8 ns memory which is a rarity than go for that but otherwise

9700 Pro > 9800 Non Pro > 9600 XT

if the 9600 XT does perform better than a 9700 pro in most situations than it is a steal at $199 MSRP especially if you can find it for $160 from other places but unless ATI plans on dumping the Radeon 9800 Pro completely and only going with
the 9800 XT than it is not in their best interest to release a 9600 XT that outperforms a radeon 9700 pro @ $199

I think the 9600/9800 have improved shader compatibility for DX9 or something like that improving DirectX 9 capibilities but yes all those support DX9.

There are no DX9 changes/improvements

"if you can find a 9800 non pro with 2.8 ns memory which is a rarity"

Which is the rarity, finding the non pro, or finding the non pro with 2.8 ns memory? Not all 9800 non-pro's come with 2.8ns mem?
