Radeon 9600XT or GeForce FX 5700 Ultra?

I'm going to upgrade from my crusty old 64MB Geforce 4 Ti4200 soon, and I can't decide between a 128MB Radeon 9600XT and a 128MB GeForce FX 5700 Ultra. I can get either for $200.

And there is that free Half-Life 2 coupon with the Radeon. . .

What do you guys think? Any input would be appreciated.

Got any links to benchmarks that compare the 9600xt, FX 5700 Ultra, and the 5900 non-ultra?
Sigh. Just look at any big card review with the the 5900U in it and subtract 5-15% for the NU. You'll see the 5900NU still stomps pathetic 5700s and 9600s flat.

Besides which you could just OC the NU core 50MHz and have U speed.

spotta be a $200 9800 np @ BB on Sunday, that might be an option
This card will stomp feeble 5700s/9600s flat too. There's no reason a man with $200 should screw himself over by getting a 5700/9600, no matter what letters are behind the numbers of shame.

The 5700U/9600XT are midrange cards and just not comparable to the high end cards like the 5900/9800.

But, to answer the original question, if you buy locally and can?t get a deal on a 9800/5900, and it comes down to the 5700U vs 9600XT. Go 9600XT. The 5700U/9600XT are generally pretty close but the DX9 performance on the 9600XT is much better making it a better future proof card.

I got that same XFX card a few weeks ago, got from buy.com for 177 shipped, works great, has the 2.2ns, havn't tried overclocking, it gets rather hot after a few hours of Halo, i could cook an egg on it, but i have added another fan, and my new PSU has 2 fans, so it shouldn't be as hot, i might overclock it just to ultra speeds, not gonna try 5950U speeds, tho i hear the XFX card i have can do it, got with the 5900nu, best deal by far, unless you can get a 9800np for 200, stay away from 9800se tho

From what I know about Nvidia brands, BFG Tech, E-VGA and PNY are some of the best.

Usually I look for Brands who carry very little software other than drivers or demos at sam price or a little lower than competitors. Or Brands that carry a crap load of software, but the price shows it, like Gigabyte cards. Asus is also another good one. Idk PNYs rep anymore. Haven't heard about them in a while.

I would say BFG is sub par for nVidia boards(I'm running one now, not too impressed although it isn't horrible). Haven't cared too much for the eVGAs I've dealt with either, although I haven't touched much of their's lately. PNY I have no experience with. Out of the nVidia brands that I've used Gainward has not failed to impress me with their quality to date, although I didn't end up with one of the defective Ti4200s either. Lately it doesn't seem to make a big difference, back in the GF/GF2 days the 2D quality difference between the vendors was huge. That said, the $200 XFX 5900NU is tempting, never dealt with them at all but at under $200 it is very interesting(just have to remind myself they screwed up their AF when the urge gets too strong ).

Okay guys, you've convinced me somewhat. . .

Screw the 9600xt and the FX 5700.

Now I'm deciding between a 9800np and an FX 5900nu, though I'm leaning towards the 9800. I don't want to spend more than $200 though.

Will that sale on the 9800's at CC still be on tomorrow (December 1st)?

Also, does the 9800np come with the Half-Life 2 coupon?
