9700, but why are you considering either of them?

I got a Mac Cube, it's about 5 years old. It's got a 16 meg video card that actually works pretty well now, but I want one that will support Core Image and Quartz Extreme. It only has an older AGP port in it, so I can't do alot, plus I'm limited by heat & card size, as well as the noise level I prefer. That's why

Is the 5200 a basic card or something? I haven't bought Nvidia in a looooong time, not since the GeForce days...

back when they were new, the 5200 was the cheapest model on the nvidia side, and the 9700 was among the highend on the ati side. it's like comparing david and goliath, goliath would have pwn david if it wasnt for God.

If you drop the first digit on the cards, they usually combare with each other in terms of marketted segments. A Radeon 9700 & a GeForce FX5700 are for gamers, and likewise an FX5200 & Radeon 9200 are for broke gamer wannabies.

A 5200 isn't a bad video card, it may not compare to a 9700 the way we may all see it, as far as performance, but for a budget AGP card, you can't go wrong with building a computer that meets better demands with CPU load versus integrated graphics.

A year ago, plus or minus a month, my oldest PC here had a GF3 Ti-200, the next-oldest had the FX 5200, and the newest had a GF4 Ti-4200. In 2D, the 5200 trailed behind both of those, and even its text handling seemed worse than anything I'd used in a long while (I acquired the 5200 on eBay for peanuts). Last summer, I put a Radeon 9700 Pro in the system I rebuilt at the time into my newest/ fastest/ most powerful, and an FX 5900se in the one then (and now) second- fastest.

Since then, I haven't had time to do much gaming, so I don't know how the two newer VGA cards compare here doing 3D. But when it comes to 2D, the Ti-500 (fan quit on the Ti-200, and a new GF3 was cheaper than a new fan!) seems quicker with simple entertainment like Spider Solitaire than the other two!
